Roof storage without bars

With the addition of a new baby as well as an 8 year old it is becoming clear that we could do with something bigger than our old focus. A new car isn't on the cards just yet so it'll have to be a roofbox/bag.

However, I don;t have a roofrack and I don't have the space to store a box when not in use.

Can anyone recommend a fold-away system that'll strap straight to the roof without the need for bars?

I can't imagine anything would be that secure strapped onto the roof.
I've seen those roof bags that go onto bars... Depending on the year of your Focus, I have a Thule footpack you could have

Why wouldn't you want to use bars? You can leave them on the car the whole time and loads of boxes will fit onto them.

As it happens I've just been chatting to my neighbour who bought a Mondeo estate a short while back and still has his old roof bars from his Focus. Only he hasn't got the feet for it.

Mine's a 2002 Focus if they'd fit.
