R9 290 Black Screen Whilst Gaming

I've had this card (non-reference standard sapphire version - the one with only on fan) for around a year and a half now. This problem is very persistent and i have been coping with it for all this time.

When gaming, my monitor black screens and i have to hard reset my PC to get it going again. BUT, here's the strange bit: after that restart i can play any game no matter what intensity/fan noise/temp is happening and i don't black screen at all (until i turn of my PC and then play games after that - then when it black screens again and i restart it is okay etc etc).

Underclocking does work, but i have to put it down from 1250 to 950 and i don't like that. I've got the latest bios and this has been happening throughout all of AMD's drivers since 13.12 (13.12 drivers didn't have this issue!).

Any help or ideas?

Regards.

i had a 290 that did the same, they are plagued with this issue.

up the voltage and downclock a tad. watch the temps.

also why do you turn your pc off ?
mine is on 24/7, less stress on components

Do you mean on as in sleep mode or do you just turn off your monitor?

I'd RMA it. I had a faulty Sapphire 7870 that was very similar, only mine wouldn't be ok after a restart

Willing to bet the card has Elpida memory which was famed for causing black screens, it's an issue which plagued the 290 and 290X. Thankfully the issue seems to be completely gone with the 390 and 390X.

As others have already suggested, your best bet is to RMA the card.

I would say the reference clock of 1250MHz on the memory is the bare minimum should be considering acceptable for the 290 series card.

If it would still black screen at this clock, I say you should definitely RMA it whilst you still got warranty.
