970/980 or hold out for next gen Nvidia?

Guys bit of a dilemma - been scouring the forums and still can't make my mind up. I currently have the spec in my sig (gtx 770). It's getting a bit long in the tooth to get max settings at a consistent 60fps playing a 1920x1200. I assume I could still achieve £50-70 for the 770 on the market.

So thinking of getting a 970 or a 980 - however given the upcoming pascal cards are likely coming in the spring should I just hold it out?

Also should my below CPU/memory be addressed - seems fine to me but just a side thought.

Any thoughts appreciated and welcome!

Personally I would go for the R9 390, costs pretty much the same as a 970 but has double the VRAM. Out of interest, what games are you noticing the 770 struggle in? Just asking as it should still pack a punch in most games.

Last 770 I saw went for £95 so I think you're under valuing your card. More like 80-100. At your resolution a 970/980 will play the vast majority of games at 60fps on high settings fairly easily, so it's a perfect card at that res. I wouldn't wait that length of time but that's a personal preference. 970's pop up quite often on the MM around the 180-200 mark.

770 can easily handle all games at high ish settings, save and buy a flagship next year. The 970 and the 980 are unable to completely max out a few recent games.

as others said the 770 should be fine at the moment anyway but your options realistically should be

buy card right now -390 is best option due to overall performance / future proofing
buy card later - what I'd recommend since the 770 should still last you and lets be honest, going from a 770 to a 970 isn't going to be long term a very smart move anyway. You'll make you're money last much longer by waiting that bit extra time and you'll get a card that keeps you from worrying about upgrading again a few months down the line.

I have the same card (but at 1080P not 1920x1200) and don't see any point in upgrading yet. Not found a game yet I cannot run at 60FPS+ with only turning off/down a bit of the eye-candy. If I had to adjust graphic options that affected gameplay (or money to burn) then I would look to upgrade.

Would a 970 be good with a Swift g-sync 1440p?
it'd be okay but at 1440p it's hard to say how long it'll last before the vram starts to become an issue.

especially if you're into modding / maxing games out. If you're happy to buy a gsynch monitor and a graphics card you know is more fixated around current games then that's fine but if you're wanting to make sure it can keep up without having to turn things down then it could disappoint. Probably better off getting pascal in a few months tbh or just go the AMD route (unless you already have the g-synch monitor).

I have a Asus Swift G-Sync. Just sold my Titan X to help pay for pascal this spring. Saving all my penny's. Need something cheap to hold me off until then. Hoping I see some good deals next week?

It'll struggle a bit with AAA titles (you'll have to drop some settings for 60fps), and the Vram issue will be at risk of coming in to play.

I own a 970 for my 1080p rig, but there's no way I'd have it in my 1440 rig (ROG Swift). I have a 980Ti in the Swift rig, but a 980 would cope fine with a few settings turned down when required.

By the way, turning the odd setting down at 1440p isn't the end of the world, in fact it's barely noticeable with some titles.

The 970 has a hdmi 2.0 port whilst the 390 doesn't. I wonder if the overclocking of the 970 can make up for it not being quite a fast at stock at higher res such as 1440p?

Many of us (including OP by his post count) can't access MM :P
No the OP can access the MM, which is why I mentioned it in the first place; check his trust not his post count. The rules were different back then since he has been a member.

Fair enough, never actually clicked the trust button and did not realise it was a thing until now :P
