I have a MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III OC V2 3072MB GDDR5 that I bought Sep 2012.

Is it worth looking at upgrading to one of the newer architecture cards?

Probably could spend something in the £150-£300 range, lower end would be better of course.

At the moment Playing WoW, Diablo, Witcher 3, Black Ops 3, Fallout 4.

Thx for your advice and any recommendations.

Personally i would stay at the 7950 and try to hold out until the die shrink next year. If you want to upgrade now then a 390 would be best for your budget. A 390 should cost you ~£250.

To hijack this thread, I'm more of less in the same boat as the OP. Mainly play WoW & looking into Star Wars BF.

Looking at an MSI R9 380, would this be a worthy upgrade, 390, or wait?

I wouldn't upgrade to a 380 from a 7950. If you're happy, then I would wait until you need the performance of something with more processing power. If you do need to upgrade, then I would aim for nothing lower than a GTX970 or an R9 390.

Thanks for the reply. Concise & knowledgeable :)

What psu have you got, as you could pick up another 7950 till the next die shrink.

I've got a Corsair HX 650W if that helps. My knowledge of matching PSU's to power needs is terrible!

R9 380 isn't really an upgrade from 7950, I'd expect performance to be very similar between them.

To be honest I'd wait for die shrinks now, should only be 3-4 months and it's been a long couple of years coming.

Sounds like waiting is the thing to do. Cheers folks.

My 7950 has lasted me an age but I recently sold it to a friend as part of a PC so it left a void. I bought a second hand 980 but I really could probably have waited til Pascal if I'm honest.

In 5-8 months (?) you might get a fair bit more oomph for that £300. Or so we all hope.

That's about all any of us can say. Waiting might be the better option.

But I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment. The new cards are certain to be more powerful, but they could also be more expensive. Being the pessimist/realist I am, I'm personally expecting Pascal and Arctic Islands to have a "premium" price across the whole range. Your £300 might only get you a cut down mid-range card next year. Who knows.

e: The 970 was a cut-down mid-range part launched at £300+, so that prediction isn't entirely unreasonable.

You're right, but there isn't a massive amount for him to upgrade to, as the 7950 is not far off an R9 380, so it's 390 or Fury or bust.

Graphics cards have been so boring since the 7970 release in what, late 2011? 4 years on the same node :(

Still gaming on a 5870, hoping to bag a bargin this week on a 380, hope to see a good jump in fps mostly playing wow also

Perhaps i'm remembering wrong but i seem to recall the 970 launching at ~£250 and upwards. Prices started cheap then climbed then dropped again.
