Hi, just put a deposit down on a used vehicle today.

Just thinking when best to buy & collect it from the dealer regarding road tax.

Am i best leaving it till next Tuesday.

unsure about this.

Thank you

yes they can sort it. But as it is £130 for the year. I thought i would be better on the 1st december for then 12 months.

was unsure if when i taxed it it would be back dated till beginning of november if i did it this month

Not sure if I have written this all correctly.

If i buy the car on the 28th november 2015. does it run out 28th november 2016 or 1st november 2016.

Whereas if so, i would be better then waiting till 1st december and buying the car. ?

You would be better off buying it on the first as far as I'm aware, but don't take that for gospel. I'm sure there will be some info on the gov website

If you buy a car on the 23rd November you need to buy tax for November. It'll cost you a month but if you wait till the 1st December you'll be driving it untaxed for a week. If the extra cost is a big deal then don't take the car until the 1st.

If he's going to use the car in November he needs to pay for novembers tax

As said tax it with the new keepers supplement when you collect it.

Sat in the MX5 and taxed it on the forecourt using the online system before I drove off

If you buy it on the 28th of November it will back date it for the whole month of November and your renewal will be on the 1st of November 2016.

For the sake of £10.83 for the month i wouldn't begrudge it, but if you wanted you could wait until the 1st of the month to collect it and not lose out on 28 days of road tax.

Now that its all online they don't really have much excuse for keeping the system this way imo but its the way it is.

They need to change the rules on this, it was set as the 1st before to keep the number of tax discs that needed printing to a minimum.

Now it's all digital, it makes no difference.

And worse that as soon as you sell a car that months tax is cancelled and you only get a refund for the full months remaining. So if you sell you car in the middle of the month, the new owners have to tax it from the beginning of the month and you only get a refund from the end of the month. Greedy gits.

At least with the old tax disc you could sell it to the new owner. Now if you don't do it online from you phone ( does the government realise many parts of the country don't have a mobile data signal?) the new owners are technically driving the vehicle away untaxed.
