AMD Retires driver updates for ALL VLIW4/5 GPUs/APUs

You've got to stop supporting old hardware eventually.

I kind of like that they're drawing a line in the sand and moving on. Focus for Win10 and DX12 please and all the next generation of toys.

Stopping optimisation for older hardware is reasonable. The question is, what if Windows release an update that breaks the current driver for those cards entirely. Will they release a fix or will owners be forced to upgrade hardware?

Some of these card bundled into the no-upgrade group are not THAT old.

Just to clarify my post above. It was not a comment on AMD discontinuing support for legacy products, as that is only normal. It was just to show that something being 4 or 5 years old doesn't mean that it is old and past it, or in this case still very much currant and still available to buy brand new from this very store.

The issue of AMD deciding to move certain products to legacy status which happens to include all of their under £50 APU's is another matter entirely.

It is true you can still buy VLIW4 APU's but AMD stopped production of them over 2 years ago, what you see left is retailers surplus stock.....

They are dirt Cheap, the most expensive part there is a £40 unlock Dual Core CPU with the added bonus of an iGPU, yes it not going to get patches for new games from now on but its no use for Battlefront anyway.

Does this mean that you can't game on old cards anymore? The drivers wont be adapted for new games so they'll run like crap or not at all? I play with someone who has crossfire 5870s still.

I too am still on CrossFire 5870s. At least I got 4½ years out of them. They gave me great performance in Battlefield 3/4 on 64 player maps. 59fps locked for the mouse vsync thing.

Though I think for my next card I'll switch to NVIDIA and single card... Haven't been on NVIDIA since 2006. 7800 GS+ AGP.

No new game profiles but the cards will still run on current games.

I still have my HD 5970s and I want to build an open bench system to run them from time to time.

Heh!

I saw this coming when the HD2000-HD4000 series got culled in 2012.

You should have all heeded the warnings that you were all next in line.

We are now all legacy HD brothers, and all stand irrelevant now, shoulder to shoulder looking into the abyss...

From the HD6000 down to the HD2000 series, all cards cast aside like turds that dry out and blow away in the wind. A pawn in a game, a means to an end.

Merely just having DX11 hardware wasn't enough to save you from AMD's sharpened axe, and now you wake up on this very new day of yours, to find that the official Radeon crimson redesign edition cannot even load on a HD6990. Just a beta version to say thanks for coming, and goodnight...

A card you paid good money for. Welcome legacy brothers, enjoy your stay.

Its a cold world out here...

If there is one GFX card manufacturer that does support older cards for longer then it's AMD without a shadow of a doubt. Some of you seem to pick and choose your arguements so poorly. At least keep it on a level playing field gentlemen.

:)

LOL one minute you are having a go at AMD for not supporting 5 year old chipsets and the next you are having another go at them for "Rebranding" old cards....come on you meany greenies you can't have it both ways.

:p

WHY?

Nvidia generally stop optimising for their cards once they are beyond 2 gens old (they even neglected the optimisation for the 700 series cards for 6 months around the time of 900 series release)...the field is hardly greener on the other side :D

If anything, AMD provide support for longer for their product range.
