MSI GS40 now available for Pre Order

I spoke with OC sales today, and hopefully these will be available next week.

As I wanted to upgrade the RAM/HDD he did warn me that doing this myself would potentially void the warranty. Reading around the web it seems that MSI are OK with you doing this, but I can't find anything official.

There also seems to be a difference on UK sites and MSI site as MSI say this can support 32GB RAM, however UK and the sales guy at OC suggest it can only support 16GB RAM.

Can anyone confirm the actual RAM support (16GB or 32GB) and whether upgrading the RAM and SDD/HDD ourselves will void warranty?

Otherwise it will have to be an order via HIDevolution, but they seem to be a but hit and miss from reading various reviews (especially for ~£2k laptop when all said and done).

I too wouldn't mind knowing the answer to the warranty situation if we open it up. Seeing as there's now 3 years included with the purchase, I'm less inclined to do anything to violate that if it means I can keep the laptop ticking away for such a long period of time without worrying.

But seeing as 8GB is more than enough for me at the moment I'm sticking to the cheaper model, however in 2 years time it might actually (although I still doubt it ) 16GB might actually be useful for gaming, so it would be nice to know the option is still there.

As for the availability, I hope it's next week as I'm going away a lot with work between now and Xmas so I want it with me!

Hi guys. I talked with OC about the deal with headphones and the warranty. I didn't specifically ask about the warranty, but I did about the headphones and I was told that they are not included with this laptop. So I would then assume, that neither is the extended warranty. I find this odd, considering, that GS40 is an MSI gaming laptop, which the deal is about, but maybe this deal started after I (pre)ordered the laptop (which I still wouldn't say is a good reason).

Yes, I'm talking about this to raise the awareness of you guys, so that you won't expect to have these included and to make sure, that if you guys get them, that I will as well (after being told that I won't). So yeah, OC, please clear this up for us and make sure everyone get's what they are supposed to. Thank you.

It's nice to see that MSI has finally realised that people actually want/need the windows key in it's correct place so that you can actually use the windows shortcuts.

Will be interesting to see this laptops thermal performance and if it suffers for any thermal throttling.

Thanks for raising awareness about this, as clearly from my previous post, I thought the GS40 would be included in this. There's absolutely no reason why it should be excluded.. it's not like it's an entirely new breed of MSI gaming laptop.. Its a smaller GS60 so what's the difference?

I've been deliberating cancelling my pre order for a while but the extended warranty was one reason I decided not to, so on top of being delayed in the UK while its released in the US it's now another reason why I'm becoming impatient. I wish the pre-order money hadn't left my account so I at least would have options if something comes up over the weekend, but I'm fully locked in now and it's just becoming frustrating. This is all assuming the laptop arrives defect free as well which is another concern these days..

Hi guys,

I ended up going for the Aorus x3 plus v5 in the end, one reason being that I was hearing the GS40 would only support 16GB RAM, not 32GB (I run a lot of VM's).

I finally heard back from MSI on a bunch of questions I'd asked so posting here for awareness - hope this helps?

1. MSI does not provide upgrading services but customers are allowed to upgrade by themselves. Removing warranty sticker and mount SSD inside of your computer doesn't change anything in case of warranty rules for other components. MSI users are allowed to void the warranty sticker to upgrade RAM, HDD and also for cleaning purposes. However, please note that any hypothetical damages which may occur during mentioned actions will not be covered under manufacturer's warranty ( for eg. Scratches, broken pieces, damaged pins etc.) This must be done gently.

2. Memory DDR4-2133, 2 slots, up to 32GB

3. Do the UK models come with a UK keyboard or are all models US keyboards?

It comes with the UK keyboard.

4. Does the laptop thermal throttle, or are there settings that can be changed/customisable?

It doesn’t throttle able. We will have the review to be released within 2-3 weeks by kitgure. You will be able to see more detail from them.

5. Does it matter if the drive in the 2.5 inch bay is a HDD or SSD?

Yes it needs to be HDD, but it will also come with 1x SSD slot that can support both M.2 SATA & PCIe GEN3 NVMe.

At least there's some good news, I would have been surprised if they really cared if you upgraded your RAM due to the simple nature of it being a gaming laptop.

I had the X3 v5 in my basket but bailed last minute, couldn't stomach the cost when I'll likely only play MMO's, Fallout, Overwatch & Battleborn on it. It would only benefit me on battery life which I'll just have to get used to being pretty abysmal even when not gaming.

Hi guys. If anyone is reading this thread anymore, since, I'm assuming, you've received your laptops, I'm posting my comments here.

I received mine last tuesday and have had about two days to try it out. Yet to play any really taxing games on it, but will be doing that today. BUT:

My laptop has an US keyboard! How about you guys? It has the UK stickers and everything but not the keyboard. I'm just guessing here, but maybe MSI had some issues with getting the UK models out of the factory (maybe because not getting the keyboards?) and decided to ship them with US keyboards? Well, anyways, that is just a small thing, that I can get used to, but it seems that in addition to that, my tab-key is faulty..this is rather annoying, since I need to send it back and do a reinstall..(of course I can take a backup, but still). The display seems to have very good colors, yet there is some edge bleeding. 128GB is just too small, but didn't have that extra cash to buy the better model :) Luckily that can be upgraded later on.

Other than these small niggles, it seems that this is a solid laptop, pending further tests to see how it handles The Heat, as in gaming, etc taxing stuff :). Thus far, I'll give it a nice solid 9.

Mine came with a US keyboard as well mate, not the end of the world though. Just glad it finally arrived:)

Been playing Syndicate on it since it arrived, pretty much on max settings bar AA and it runs at ~35-40fps. Really impressed with the machine, screen is really impressive, no bleeding here either and the keyboard feels great to type on, especially coming from only Macbooks.

About 4 hours at 50% brightness doing light tasks and around 2 plugged into TV streaming via HDMI. Don't even bother with gaming though, hour at best at 50% performance.

Hi Guys.

For anyone that has purchased, could you kindly email me with your serial number and a picture of the keyboard layout. I will be in touch to assist in rectifying this for you.

Please note I will be in Taipei until Sunday so there maybe a delay of upto 24 hours before I acknowledge your message.

please email neilreid (at) msi (dot) com

Regards

Guys,

This morning at work I was using the machine with no issues, shut the lid to go into a meeting and now I can't get it out of two different BSOD's. One says KERNAL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE and the other is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I can boot it into safe mode but we only have WiFi so I can't download the windows debugging tool to look into the multiple dump files that are accumulating. Tried a couple of CMD commands but no luck, unsure what to do as I'm no where near home to get the recovery files.

Thanks Loki, I ended up having to do a full restore using the MSI tool pre-installed. I'm quite grateful that it was there, because the windows restore was failing to go past 12%.

I managed to put the logs onto the HDD which wasn't wiped and I'm going to look at them when the MS software downloads to see what the root cause was. I'm still worried though that it might happen again in all honesty, as I did lose everything I'd configured for development. The risk of it happening again concerns me so I might still give them a call with the log details to see if you guys can help figure out what it might have been.

Temps barely go above 65 for me at full whack. Fan noise on the other hand is definitely there and most of the time as well. Cooling it seems has taken higher priority, which personally I prefer if the laptop is intended to last for a couple of years at least. Ones of the fans has kicked in even as I'm typing this with just Chrome open, only for about 5 seconds but again, it isn't quiet.

Thanks for this. Didn't want to reply until I had thought about what you said a bit. I think the noise would annoy me so I probably need to go for something a bit bigger.

I'll be honest, I'm coming from a 2015 Macbook Air and I'm already used to the fans. I guess my rationale is that the hardware does need to be cooled, albeit not during idle tasks like browsing the web but if it's doing it for a reason then I'm willing to compromise. The laptop is a beast, it runs games incredibly well for the size and price and I personally would take a hit on some noise to have this hardware wherever I need travel in this form factor.

Ultimately the decision is yours, but generally from the people on notebookreview who also have the laptop, the consensus is that it's a worthy investment.
