30% off a 3grand pc and I'm buyin!

You think they can just knock a grand off like that? I doubt they even make 30% markup on the system.

Black Friday is not retailers giving things away at a loss. Some people have ridiculous expectations.

Right, 30% off is ridiculous, silly me!

Nobody said you did.

this guy:
A grand off some of the high end gaming pc's would have been sweet!

In a perfect world, we would make thousands of pounds on gaming PCs and everything would be candy and roses but this is reality and that doesn't happen.

even if we had a PC where we could knock a grand off the price and still be making some margin, would any of the people upset about it actually buy it?

probably not. making this whole thing largely irrelevant.

I honestly expected it was going to be one of 8-packs unsold beasts.

we sell 2-3 8pack systems a month and they are built to order.
we dont just have 8pack systems worth tens of thousands of pounds strewn around the office. That would be a bit crazy.

No that is exactly what Black Friday was invented for and meant to be. Retailers shifting old stock at cost or less than cost.

That top of the range pc we built in January and nobody bought at £6k? Lets get some of our money and sell it for £3k. That is the perfect Black Friday item. Yes the retailer is probably selling at a loss compared to original cost but probably needs to be that price in order to sell it as there is better and cheaper components now (and each of those items have probably dropped in price that it would only be a £3k pc now)

A few jucier deals would have been great though. Last month I bought a 2 and a half grand guitar amp for 1200 quid, so these deals still do happen, just not on pc parts it seems.

The margins on components and builds are pretty small, which is why its hard to make this business model work

I suspect the £2500 price on your amp was about £1500 profit. Retailers sometimes have loss leaders, but by and large they aren't going to sell at less than cost.

..yet when they discount old items that aren't shifting, people complain that it is back of the warehouse trash, dust gatherers and items nobody wants? OcUK cannot win with you lot.

Why do they have any incentive to sell things at a loss when they sell like hotcakes at normal price?

That's not quite true though is it?????

two pre built 8-pack demo machines and there used to be 5 in there last time I checked including ones which were £6k/£7k.

SO yeah I have always assumed you have had £10k - £20k of 8 pack systems lying around the office ;)

Well then no point having a black friday sale then is there?

But liek i said, its been hijacked now and every retailer just has a small sale.

A 2500 guitar amp is a boutique item and would be stocked in less than 5 pieces, so no it doesn't work that way.

I expect that OCUK purchase the majority of their computer parts at around 50% (max) of their pre VAT sell price. Especially on the big bulk orders. If not, their buyers would be underperforming. Of course there are other overheads in running the business, but still to say there is no way they could do a 30% discount on a 3grand pc, it's laughable.

an ex demo system used for promo purposes, reviews and press tours is a very different thing to a new, bespoke system built and customised to your requirements.

the ex demo stuff is pre discounted already with already enormous savings over what they should be. fact is that anyone in the market for a £8k+ system is going to want to do a bit to make it special to them.

come on now. you cant be that silly surely?

50% margin is a VERY rare thing. maybe on a SATA cable or a cheap fan or something I would agree. but that really is the silliest thing i have heard.

I will go and tell Gibbo he is under performing now. :)

I dont get why people think sales means stupidly cheap prices. They don't. Well they do if you go que up at a store for 24hrs and make sure your like in the first 5 in the que.
Otherwise sales are always just buy something you already want at a slightly cheaper price. But always check price and competition, as you would normally.
