Upgrade to a 390X?

Of sorts yes but slightly tweaked and newer hardware. Its not just a rebadge as has been discussed in depth on the AMD threads on here when they were launched :)

It is an improvement especially if you can't find a cheap 290x on the market.

Clock for clock they perform EXACTLY the same. See any of the hardocp 390x reviews. Can the 390x OC better? A bit, and has a bit better cooling, but you get more or less the same thing.

I think hardocp are probably the least trust worthy reviewer given some of the language they have used about AMD, the strange way they use different setting for different cards in the same review and don't publish their benching methodology so it can be replicated.

There are a lot of other reviewers and pretty much universally they have the 390X about 10% ahead of the 290X despite only a 5% clock difference.

The 390X is better for running in crossfire at higher resolutions.

If you aren't planning on gaming at any higher than 1440 then I wouldn't spend the extra.
