Police Acadamy

The politicians would like you to believe this, in reality they are ill equipped for the current gangland wars, and even more ill equipped for the terrorist attack potentials. Dixon of Dock Green is no longer.

We are not without problems of course but compared to US it is still a very different society that our police has to serve. I lived in Chicago for a year where annual murder rates are roughly the number of soldiers the British Armed Forces have lost in Afghanistan in the last two decades so being a policeman there would be a very different job to policing even somewhere like London.

The biggest issue with American Police is that they are expected to police a society so obsessed with firearms that they never know if the person they're speaking with is in possession of something that could kill them in an instant. They have to be on full alert all the time, and if they get it wrong, they die.

More to the point, It is reasonable for them to assume that anybody who gives them a hard time or runs is likely to be a criminal and, as such, is likely to be armed!

I am actually very sympathetic towards US Police.

In a way that, not even professional Soldiers face, they go out every single morning facing the possibility that this is going to be the day that they dont get to go home!

It is a hell of a Job! And I have the greatest admiration for the people who chose this calling.

My OP was not, in any way, meant as a criticism. Simply a comment on how my eyes were opened as regards a further aspect of a US Policeman's life.

one issue is the American police legally do discriminate against hiring people with above average IQ....

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is perfectly normal practice in heavily rule based/chain of command organisations.

Anecdotal of course, but I remember being told by a fellow pupil (whose Father was an airline pilot) that the airline he worked for had an upper IQ limit for their pilots too.

The argument is wanting to have people who are smart enough to do the job, but not so smart that they will go straight to page 14 on the check list when something has gone wrong because they think they know better!

Anybody more than +2SD (And certainly anybody more than +3SD )above average is likely to be a loose cannon.

There are plenty of organisations that simply do not want the grief (and indeed the legal fallout) that might arises form such loose cannons following their own non-approved decisions.

We aren't America, there are plenty of other countries out there with crime levels and policing models more similar to our own yet instead the comparison is always drawn with the US.

the biggest issue with the USA is the fact they are morons who allow idiots/general public to purchase guns

The biggest issue with the UK is the fact they are morons who allow idiots/general public to purchase Coldplay albums.

Or more seriously, how about cars? More people are killed in traffic accidents than by guns after all.
