No im not misunderstanding you but i think you are me.

Fact 1: selling fess ion ebay is 10%

Yes

Why would a seller sell to you outside fo ebay for 20% off?
Because they want to make the sale? Most people aren't going to price their item at the lowest they're willing to sell it at. Ergo there's room for negotiation.

I can understand them going halves, they get 5% and the buyer gets 5% but your way you are the only winner?

How am I the only winner? They want to sell their item. I've made them an offer, they want me to buy it.

They get the same amount giving me a 10% discount through eBay as they would giving me a 20% discount by sidestepping eBay.

They get the sale, I get the item. As I said above, the asking price on eBay isn't going to be the absolute lowest they're willing to get it go for. Think of the MM here, people typically price their items with the intention of someone coming in and offering a lower price.

And I am automatically suspicious of any ebay selling who tries to deal a deal outside of ebay as "most" are scammers although I appreciate you aren't but I would never sell to you fro a 20% off when I get 10% more by selling through ebay.

You wouldn't get 20% more on eBay because you'd have eBay fees. The point is that if I negotiate a discount through eBay, the option for a larger discount outside of eBay is always there.

Yews theres room for negotiation but whether you take 10% off on ebay or outside of ebay is irrelevant. You described it that the 10 to 20% came off the seller cause it was outside of ebay. What you are describing is my example where we have agreed to come down to £90 from £100 whether its inside ebay or not.

You saying the seller wants to sell is a cop out. Of course sellers want to sell. In your case the seller is only getting £81 from an item he listed at £100. If he;'s happy with that, then that's fine. Why it has to be outside of ebay I have no idea. Every seller has their bottom minimum price and if thats £81 then so be it.

I often buy items for much less than the BIN price on ebay. That's a given. But why should I take it outside of ebay and the seller gets no more but has more hassle? Okay they have sold the item but thats it.

Basically you mean desperate people take up your offers or people who vastly overpriced their items?

But it works for you. However, like I said, I would politely refuse your offer and so would many people.

You need to look at what they actually get, not what the eBay price is.

Do you know what a cop out is? I feel like you don't. I'm explaining why countless times I've had sellers deal outside of eBay. They do so because they want the sale.

Because you can offer a more attractive price to close the sale by doing so. For example "hey, thanks for your offer, I can't do that much off but if we go outside of eBay I could".

It's not exactly the same situation, but the end result is I spend less, and the seller gets the same (or more if we settle in the middle on a price), but actually makes the sale.

No, I mean what I've actually said. To make the assumption that people are desperate suggests that the price they've set is their bottom/best price. That is very rarely the case.

But it works for you. However, like I said, I would politely refuse your offer and so would many people.

Speak for yourself, you don't actually have any experience in this as you keep demonstrating. The vast majority of stuff I buy on eBay I will buy in this manner. Most of the time it works fine.

The whole premise of this "debate" was that you couldn't understand why people would give a discount for going outside of eBay. I'm not making an argument for why, I'm simply explaining the process of how I've dealt with sellers.
