Cleaning products - "Kills 99% of all germs"

This was a question on qi and they said it probably does kill 100% but they can't prove the last 1% due to technical limitations or something. Maybe being to small?

In fact, given they don't know exactly how many types are present and how many of each type, they don't know what 100% is and therefore can't honestly claim to kill 99%.

The "99%" may refer to bacteria by volume rather than by type.
It may only kill 1 specific type of harmless bacteria which just happens to be massively more abundant than all the other types and still claim to kill 99% of bacteria.
 
The 1% germs are super rich and can afford all kinds of healthcare plans, bodyguards and underground bunkers that the 99% live without. It just makes them that much harder to kill.
 
What always make me laugh is how many germs are there? Hundreds, Millions, Billions?
Because one percent of a million is 10,000 germs it can't protect you against, and how many of that large number live in my house.
 
If there are billions of germs, the odds are that some are going to have some mutation that makes them immune?

That'd be my guess.
 
It's actually to do with log reduction of bacteria.

99% = 2 log reduction
99.9% = 3 log reduction
99.99% = 4 log reduction
etc...

This can be a little misleading for the general consumer who doesn't think there is any difference but in actuality it makes quite a lot of difference!

Edit: For some further explanation. If you had 50,000,000 bacteria on a 2cm square surface, a product would have to reduce its number to 500,000 in order to claim to be 99% effective.

Wasn't it down to airborne bacteria & germs landing on your germ-free surface immediately after it being cleaned?
 
Think we need some clarification from the producers of these products.

What good is bleech if it cannot kill all germs. Or at least all known germs.
