To emigrate, or just move down South...

why oh why I you even contemplating it, I moved down south and for the most part wish I never did.

The only difference down here is that its more expensive, more expensive, more expensive and its full of southerners.

...and, for the most part, they don't even have hills. It's far too flat.

In Shropshire they have a mole hill, and make a bloody great big deal out of it. It's called the Wrekin and is a tor, or hillock, at best. They think it's world famous when in reality wouldn't register as anything anywhere up North :D

Having figured out who you are working for in Harlow I would say take the Iceland job!

Harlow is a dump. My gf did same as you and took the job in Harlow rather than abroad with the intent we would look at relocating down in Harlow. The place is hideous and the people are trolls.

Ask yourself this one question. In 30 years time when you look back, will you ever say to yourself "I really regret not taking that job in Harlow?"

That's a good point. My flights from Switzerland back to the UK are cheaper than a return train from Birmingham to London.

Yep same with my gf. She can fly to the headquarters in Germany quicker than she can get to Harlow.

Oh and don't get me started with nice places to live down there.

For the price of our house we would have a modern house on a housing estate with neighbours and no countryside.

If we want the kind of house we have in the NE it was going to cost us another £200k.

And the rest I would've thought :(

My local town was featured in the Guardian as one of the least affordable places in the country for first time buyers :(

Move can always move back or some where else, once you get used to moving its becomes something relatively easy to deal with. although they do say that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do and more so if you moving to another country. But once you get sorted house wise its all gets back to normal.

Yeah I was probably being conservative. Common from a 4 bedroom, 300 year old stone house with 6 acres of land I was shocked to discover Id be living in a modern box 3 bedroom house in a **** hole down south unless we wanted to put a lot more money to it.

Luckily my gf hung out the commuting and staying down there during the week until the allowed her to work from home :)

Speaking as an expat who grew up near Harlow: go to Iceland :p

Been here just over 3 years now, and I genuinely miss Taiwan more when I visit the UK than the other way around. I've been moving house at least once a year for the last 10 years anyway, so I probably found it easier to move around the world than many people would.

Aside from family, I only really miss foods - when I do, I just remind myself of all the amazing cheap stuff I can eat here that I wouldn't find back in the UK, and swiftly forget about it :)

Go for it.

Remember that other job thread? Something like, should I move to Japan...

haha :D

"I was so glad I didn't move to Iceland when I had the chance", said nobody ever.

Iceland: The country that has an app where people can check if they are related before shagging, so they *ADORE* foreigners, there's a national pride in keeping fit, have hot springs to bath in and the northern lights.

Harlow: I hear it has a nice church.

and the women in Harlow don;t look like this either

thats hardly a fair choice - i'm not even going to tell you which one you should go for - its obvious and you've already figured it out ;)
