At what point do you get your tyres changed?

I change them when advised to, or if I notice an issue that needs sorting, such as gouges in the sidewall or uneven tread wear.

At only 6k miles a year though, they last me a long time.

During yearly service or MOT, whichever spots an issue. I understand the minimum tread level lowers performance, but it's not really an issue if you drive with it in mind.

Exactly, I had a similar argument with myself with regards to Uniroyals RS3 v Conti CS5's, the Conti's are £180 more expensive but they will last me circa 3 years, £60 per year is peanuts. You'll spend more on a night out!

I don't really get why Continental are still brining out new tyres on the Uniroyal brand, surely the tyres would be more prestigious and sell better as a mid-range Continental instead of a top-range tyre from a second tier company :S

I must drive like an old man. Granted I only have a 320d but I just checked when I had all 4 of my tyres changed - 11th of December last year - and I've done 35k on them so far. Just checked my tread and the rears have 4mm tread left and the fronts have 5.5mm so should be good for a while yet.

My car lives pretty much entirely on a motorway and only has 16 inch wheels so that must be why but it still seems bizarre the fronts have worn that little over the last 35k. Still, I'll replace them when they're around the 2-2.5mm mark.

Utterly amazing what you can get out of tyres when not powersliding out of every corner ;)

How does one tyre get like that?
the rest were OK.

When the tread is low or when they are about 6 or 7 years old which ever comes first. The oils evaporate out after a while and UV and heat degrades the rubber even if the tread looks good.

Normally around 2mm, but if it's going into winter I may get them changed a bit sooner.

My 3 series used the front tyres up at pretty much the same rate as the rears. I just can't imagine a tyre lasting 27k unless it was hard as plastic and had the grip of a bar of soap.

The Goodyear F1A2s on my mum's 325i are lasting very well. She has done over 15k miles on them and rears are currently 4mm and fronts are 6.5mm. Was very impressed!

Of course you can predict heavy rain, bits of motorway covered in puddles or when someone pulls out in front of you.

3mm for me, but the last time I changed tyres was because the sidewall was cracking. They still had 4mm of tread.
