I want to buy a bottle a of vodka which is specific to New Zealand. However, on my way home I am leaving the airport at both Sydney and Dubai. Does anybody know without doubt whether I will be able to take a bottle with me with the intention of taking it home to England? Thanks.

International law applies?

I've no idea what you mean lol, hence why I'm asking. I know it's a simple question if I was taking from one country to another ( upto 4l of mixed wines / spirits or something, however, as I'm going into Sydney, then checking back in at Sydney to Dubai, then staying there for 3 nights, then checking in again. I just want to be sure that I won't have to surrender the bottle at customs for illegally importing it lol. It'd be a nice addition to my collection of spirits and liquors I'm building.

If you were passing through the airport, you'd probably be okay checked in. If it was duty-free it would probably be okay in hand luggage too.

As you're leaving the airport, local laws apply. You're best off seeing if there's a way to store it somewhere or post it home.

I understand that, I'm buying a bottle of royal dragon vodka from Dubai duty free on my last flight. I'm not buying the bottle in NZ from duty free, it's from a liquor store so will be checked in with my baggage. From what I can tell I should be ok I guess though.

I took a bottle of Whisky from New Zealand to UK via Sydney, Singapore, and Doha (Qatar) in checked baggage without any problems.

That was in Dec 14 - Jan 15.

I wouldn't dream of posting it home, it'll cost about £60 with no guarantee of it arriving in one piece lol. I think I'll just take it through checked. It's only about £20 anyway.

Alcohol

Non-Muslim residents can get a liquor licence to drink alcohol at home. These licences are valid only in the Emirate that issued the licence. Residents must also get a permit to be able to drink in licensed venues.

Alcoholic drinks are served in licensed hotels and clubs, but it is a punishable offence to drink, or to be under the influence of alcohol, in public. The legal age for drinking alcohol is 18 in Abu Dhabi (although a Ministry of Tourism by-law allows hotels to serve alcohol only to those over 21), and 21 in Dubai and the Northern Emirates (except Sharjah, where drinking alcohol is illegal).

Passengers in transit through the UAE under the influence of alcohol may also be arrested.

I'd imagine if you leave it in your holdall, you should be fine. To be sure, keep it in its duty-free bag.

What's that supposed to mean? Why would 'international law' (Which 'international law') apply when bringing alcohol into and out of say, Dubai? The law of Dubai will apply.

You mean someone felt the need to post on the internet without actually having a single clue about the subject of the thread? Well I never.:D

Recently I was refused a sale in Bangkok airport as I was transiting Dubai

this was just a connection, seemed odd but apparently I would have fallen foul of some law (probably one to do with reducing Dubai duty free profits :p )

I just figured it was passing through the airport, which isn't owned by the state right?

But OP has said hes staying a bit, so 'tis redundant.

Dubai airport is owned by the State. Many airports are. Plus the law of the land applies there, you don't think an airport is some sort of random lawless zone with international super cops do you?

Pretty sure I was watching one of those reality programs 'Ultimate Airport Dubai' and a passenger had some alcohol confiscated when they found it in his luggage!

If you can afford to lose it then I'd suggest taking a gamble as they might not search your bags, however I'm pretty sure they will confiscate it if found!!
