Sensible to try and find a Ford Focus specialist?

Clutch I can almost understand because a worn one will slip and mask any jerkiness in your own driving but on what planet does an alternator affect "how smoothly" a car drives?

Every car I've ever owned feels like it drives differently after I've owned it for a while, then once it's sold I look back on how well it drove too....funny thing familiarity

This is one of the weirdest threads I've read in a while. If you can't quantify or explain any better than "smooth" and "downgrade" then you've got no hope. If you can actually explain what the problem is then any competent mechanic will be able to fix it in sure. Like rodenal said, an alternator has absolutely no impact on how a car drives so it may well be all in your head

It's a basic run of the mill car that even spanner monkey at home can work on, you wont find a specialist for it!

Just take it to any reputable mechanic (i know its extremely hard to fine one) or just use a reputable Ford Specialist, and dont be fooled by any tom dick and harry claiming to be a specialist on x,y,z have come across plenty of them.

Then the day before and day after getting a new alternator were night and day difference.

As mentioned above, the battery was likely disconnected whilst changing the alternator - this would lose any learnt info from the ECU, which would take a little while to settle down. This could cause a noticable roughness, but would be a gradual improvement back.

Mostly this though - if you have even a small bad experience (e.g. unexplained rattle or noise), you worry about it for for more than you should. If the car suddenly isn't smooth, or a gear change is rough, then you start prejudging that it will always be rough.
