best upgrade from a Nexus 5

Hi guys,

I've currently got a Nexus 5 and I'm looking for a budget replacement. the contract I'm on now is £22 a month which was really good, and i appreciate I'm unlikely to be able to get something so cheap again, but I'm happy to go up to £25 a month for a decent mobile. What is a good replacement? I've seen there's a new Nexus 5X but the reviews aren't all that great - any other alternatives?

many thanks,

B@

For that money you could probably get a z3 although im not sure hw much of an upgrade it would be.

TBH youvr got a snapdragon 800 in there at the moment ad to get a decent boost youd have to look at the 810 (if you like bbq) or the exynos in the s6 neither of which are going to be super cheap you might get a 32gb s6 for under 30 quid a month if you shop around and are willing to cut your data usage but for the moment you might be better off holding fire till the new 820 comes out hopefully early next year

The 5X is an upgrade from the 5 in my opinion - but it is quite a bit larger but if that doesn't bother you then it's a good upgrade. IF not the Z5 compact might be good?

I've had far far too many phones over the last two years

The N5x is a fantastic phone. It really is.

That said, if you don't mind running a non-stock rom, take a look at the LG G4 as it can be had for £299 now.

The two were on my shortlist, but after looking at them both side by side in the shop I decided on the n5x

If you're happy with the the Nexus 5 then personally I'd just move on to a sim-only deal (monthly if you prefer, though it's more expensive than a 12 month one) and stick with what you've got. With stock android it's still easily a speedy phone well up to doing whatever you want. The only downside compared to the newer flagships (particularly the 2015 range) is the camera and the battery (though some new phones aren't much better). Other than that it's still very close to a top phone.

I only moved up to the Nexus 6P because I wanted a bigger screen. I couldn't even bear to sell the Nexus 5 so I gave it to my mum.

Not a problem depending on the phone. The 6P gets no warmer than any other phone (in fact it gets less warm than my Nexus 5 due to the large metal surface area better dissipating the heat) and I haven't seen any complaints with the Z5 series other than in certain camera scenarios, and the recent update might have fixed that?

honestly, save your self some cash, go to a sim only deal and keep using the N5. i have one and i dont there there really is a replacement for it yet.

Have to agree. I'm still using an LG G2 which is basically a Nexus 5 other than the camera and battery. Stick a sim in it and upgrade next year.

I upgraded to an S6, My N5 camera would never work, battery would drain exponentially and I have loads of software bugs inherent in android that would crash apps all the time (possibly the worst and best phone I've owned).

Happy with my S6, however I pay a bit more but I do get 5gb of data.

I actually use all the bells and whistles, and the camera is fantastic, pretty much consider it a full alternative to a normal camera as the quality is superb.

Snap, done the same here now gone PAYG and kept my G2, can't see anything really worth changing to!

Disagree - N5 has had its day in my opinion. The camera is so poor - after upgrading to the S6 I find I actually take pictures, where I just wouldn't have bothered with the N5 because they'd have been rubbish. And the weak battery life of the N5 is so limiting.

It was a great phone but there are much better experiences now.

I think it depends why you are upgrading or what you are looking for. If you are perfectly happy with what you have but are simply looking to replace the phone because your contract has expired (in the way many people seem to do, saying odd things like "I'm due an upgrade"), then I'd say the suggestion to stick with what you have and just go sim only is a good one, save some cash. But maybe you are looking for a better phone?

I don't think there is enough info to go on, people are saying the Nexus 5 camera is poor but maybe the op doesn't care about the camera, is stock android important, is there a budget? Not much to go on really.

the nexus 5 has to go, it's been taken to pieces so many times from me dropping it and breaking the screens that the signal doesn't work properly any more. I do want a better camera, as the nexus 5's one is terrible, so i'll look to getting an S6 :) many thanks!

I'm still using my N5 and I'm not itching to upgrade. I don't buy "cutting edge" any more - I like to watch other people splash many hundreds on a phone I know will drop in price over a few months.
The N5 will do me for at least another 6 months.

I'm with you there, I used to upgraded yearly but can't see much point these days. Only just replacing my Nexus 4, and may have delayed that even longer if I hadn't dropped it last week and smashed the back. Though sounds like the OPs N5 is knackered anyway.
