ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

It only took them almost 4 hours to report it, whilst all the major news channels were reporting it within a couple of hours.

Maybe they're just **** these days.

Lmao at people here claiming that the BBC not publishing news the instant they hear about something having happened being evidence of some sort of agenda. And even more lmao that someone's genuine thought was that we need people with firearms on the street.

Some of you should try reading what you write. You sound mental.

I didn't suggest that the BBC had an agenda, I've just found their reporting isn't that good these days and they're slower than everyone else to provide breaking news.

commercial organisations tend to want to be first with breaking news, BBC tends to wait until they've got facts confirmed

thus you'll see some commercial media repeating, for example, stuff from twitter rather rapidly etc...

It's lucky the police were able to get there quickly, a softer target could have been a lot worse. Not very reassuring to see them stuff up the taser though.

What dowie said. I'd rather my news sources brought me substance than "Twitter has said something's happened, more when we get it. Meanwhile we will speculate." This does lead to stories not appearing instantly but there are other places to go if that's what you want. I don't want my news channel to be a Sky News ratings grab.

IIRC the official BBC editorial guidelines basically say they need
X number of independent sources.
Y Number of independent sources that are known reliable.
Z A definitive source.

So they probably won't respond to twitter etc as a breaking news, unless it's an official feed, or they can verify that something is going on in which case they'll likely couch it terms that make sure people know they're uncertain exactly what is happening (it saves on having to do a retraction when it turns out the witness is going on hearsay and was two streets over at the time, or when it turns out the picture is an old one from a previous incident).

They won't report based on what say Sky or the Mirror say unless they know both are getting information from different sources.

They will report very quickly from a single report from say an official Police (or other emergency service) source.

I believe the BBC is meant to place far more importance on getting it right first time, than getting it out first in most cases.

I live in a pretty rough area (zone one, SE1) where the crime rate is the highest, there's been quite a few stabbings this year, and other problems - but none of it has been Islamic or terrorist related, there were a few Islamic nutters preaching at Elephant & castle tube a while back, but that was only once.

One thing I find interesting, is how this sort of thing happens all the time - yet when it's related to Islam everyone is beside themselves, London is a *very* rough place - yet when Islam is involved, it's suddenly the exception and the media go nuts.

I think it's down to people assuming it's part of a coordinated thing rather than one off gang violence.

Besides it sells papers.

I'm sure if the news was invested in reporting gang attacks then it would be the same outcry.

Unfortunately that's the nature of the beast with Taser. Both barbs have to connect and stay in clothing or skin to incapacitate. Last time I checked it had a fail rate of around 50-60% and if the target is wearing bulky clothing like a padded jacket there's going to be an issue.

That said when it connects and works as intended as shown towards the end of the video, it works very very well.

well it is hardly surprising - gang violence in rough areas is common enough, sure

people get mugged in big cities too - but often enough they're able to hand over their possessions and avoid being stabbed

someone not involved in a gang, not being drunk and getting in a fight but simply an ordinary person using the tube and getting stabbed at random - of course that is going to make headlines

Why can't tube officers be armed? They have them armed at the major train stations.

I was only at Euston on Thursday, there were 2 armed police in the concourse.

The tube is, and will always be a major target for the nut jobs.
