Hi all, looking to scratch the upgrade itch, but stuggling to see where I can make tangible gains, so throwing myself for advice please

my rip is the following:

CPU - i7 4770k
Gfx - GTX 970
MoBo - Z97X-UD3H-BK
Mem - 32gb Ripjaw
2 x SSD and 2 x 4tb HDD's
27" 2k unlocked Panel at 122hz

I get decent performance, however the computer is used to do a lot of diffrent stuff, I have a 8 CH CCTV link as well as all the other pc stuff you'd expect inc games

So, what should you guys suggest?

Thanks

Could always get a second monitor if squeezing for a 980ti is out of your budget atm, I have two and struggle so much to use anyones PC that only has 1, had three at one point but it was too excessive.

Im going to get shot here...but... If you sold your card and bought a R9 390x You would probably only need to spend £100. It is an upgrade. And DX12 you know...

Another option could be another 970? But there's probably not a huge difference between that and selling yours and buying a 980ti.

second monitor isnt an option as its in the corner of a living room, also got 8tb of HDD space.

How much of an upgrade is the R9 390x vs the GTX 970 ?

Thanks

Not a lot by the looks of it, seems to do better in some games than others. I'm not a green fan boy, I keep wanting to give another AMD card a go but their driver support really puts me off. I hear Nvidia lied about Dx12 support, but on the other hand everything just works on release day for me.

Nvidia haven't lied about about Dx support what they advertise you get. The only thing they had a "lie" (wasn't a lie more of a miscommunication) was about the Gtx 970s vram state.

Having run two 970s at 1440p I reccomend getting a 980ti instead as if you upgrade your monitor you will just have a plague of issues with the 970s

Looking on the Nvidia site this list is supposed to support Dx12 http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/dx12/supported-gpus

I had heard that in fact they don't and Nvidia are trying to use drivers to get around this. I'm happy to be proved wrong as I'm just repeating what I've heard in this case and haven't researched it myself as I'm waiting for the next generation to upgrade.

What issues did you have with the 970s? My 680SLI runs almost everything lovely at 1440p so its a shame to hear the 970 isn't the same.

The 970s have a VRAM issue when games start to use 3.5gb of the ram it starts to run like **** and is completely unplayable this is well documented everywhere :)

They are fine realistically for 1080p but going above is pushing it :) all cards released in the past need software updates for dx12 not just Nvidia lol.. They could not have drivers/settings for a api that didn't exist at the time but that they knew the hardware requirements for.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I know about the Vram issues, and I understand that Dx12 would need a driver update on both sides. What I heard was that the AMD hardware was designed to work directly with the Dx12 api whereas the Nvidia hardware was not and they are trying to compensate for that with software.

not a fan of ATI cards these daysd an it seems performace is marginal, with my CCTv stuff, games and web browing (all at the same time, I can hit between 70-90% cpu usage, is there any cpu's worthy of a upgrade from 4770k ? or is the best way to go the 980ti?

EDIT : Sorry I mis read that haha - 980ti will give you the best performance gain :) there are better cpus than a 4770k BUT you won't see a difference in performance whilst playing 99.9% of games :) So the 980Ti is definitely the way to go as it will give you a very good performance gain.

Ok cool , Thanks,

As an aside, I have a Freez-r for the CPU, is that acceptable or should that be upgraded? (I ask as I noticed that the air being thrown out of the top of the case is getting pretty darn warm , CPU Idle temps show 57-65 and under load 75-80)

Thanks again

80 Under load is fine :) Though you can always upgrade and overclock if you want as that can yield nice performance gains. Better in some uses than others. Could you let us know what case you have you pc in? As this will help us know what coolers would be compatible with your case so you could have some options in front of you in case you decide you want to upgrade them though as i said not needed as it is 80 is fine :)
