Hi guys, I finally got myself a new laptop after much deliberation.

HP Envy. 12GB Ram. i7 processor. 940M graphics card. 2Tb Harddrive.

Anyway, had it for a few days now and whenever I right click on anything on the left hand side in file explorer it just freezes up.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great!! Cheers!!

I'm betting it's some bloatware HP has pre-loaded. Laptop manufacturers have been known to install things which slow down their systems on purpose. I have no idea why they do it.

So this laptop is new? You bought it, it let you put your data on the laptop but now it's freezing up?

Could be:

1. Hardware issue, which would be bad news. But does the rest of the PC operate just fine if you go about using it?

2. Does it have an SSD or a mechanical hdd?

3. If mechanical do the following:

Open up My Computer (This PC)
Right Click on the drive and choose properties
Choose the tools tab - Error Checking and do a scan

I think there might be an option to repair errors as well on one of the subsequent screens. Give it ago and you might see the option.

The other thing to do from this screen is a defrag.

But not if it's an SSD.

---

Last case scenario is to do a repair which according to Microsoft keeps your files.

"Resetting lets you choose whether to keep your files or remove them, then reinstalls Windows. To get started, go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started and choose an option."

Option

Keep my files
Reinstalls Windows 10 and keeps your personal files.
Removes apps and drivers you installed.
Removes changes that you made to settings.
Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed. (If your PC came with Windows 10, apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.)

I don't know if this has anything to do with your problem but when I recently did a fresh install of W10 I loaded Google Drive and whilst the machine was syncing I had trouble using windows explorer. When I right-clicked anything in the left hand pane the context menu didn't appear properly. It looked like a thin vertical white line with no entries (such as copy, paste etc) appearing at all.

Is your machine doing any heavy syncing, uploaded/downloaded or other process whilst this problem appears?

Opeth, Boke, and others many thanks for the responses.

In reply to Opeth, (Boke, no, no syncing/hard work at all! Bear with me I'm not technically minded with computers!)

1. I've literally owned it 3/4 days. John lewis this retails at £950. I got it for 200 less brand new from hp direct. If it is a hardware problem it's going back!

I haven't put any data on it other than setup, download chrome, spotify and steam (which I'm new too)

2. The laptop is working just fine. It's a mechanical hard drive.

3. Very interesting. I right clicked and waited for over 10 minutes (to get the option for properties)

Now, I've done it. As follows..

It said it doesn't need a scan,

Then told me it found errors.. lol

Now, I opened 'show details' and found this under the 'system' tab

Am I right in thinking those some 20,000 errors should not be there?

I have no idea where to go further from this.

Really appreciate you guys help. I will take a look for a 'repair' button in the meantime.

Thanks!

IF there is nothing on the laptop which you are bothered about losing, then do a refresh and choose not to keep files etc.

This will set up Windows 10 to a clean state.

To get started, go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started and choose option Remove everything.

This will reinstall Win 10 and remove any custom drivers, crap ware that might be installed on the laptop.

Just to reiterate it will also delete all your data if there is any any.

It sounds like whatever is causing all those events in the event log is the reason why the laptop is pausing for long time. What does task manager say about your CPU usage?

Hopefully after a reinstall of windows your be back to a clean state.

A installed program that has put an entry into the right-click context menu. A Spybot context menu option perhaps?

Opeth the thing is I would rather not start messing about resetting etc as It's a new laptop I shouldn't have to play about I'm worried I'd do something wrong lol!

Thanks though should it come to it.

Sorry Sighn, that is a bit technical for me haha.

Interestingly I just scrolled down the list of errors and there are a fair few there that mention McAffee drivers? The laptop has come with 'McAfee' anti virus for 1 month. Which I'll be binning off anyway. Surely not something as simple as that though?

Cheers.

do you have a model number?, as looking through the HP message boards brings up a fair few similar issues (re HP Envy) but is hard to pin down without it.

I know it seems scary to reset the PC, but Win 10 will take for everything for you. As long as PC is connected to the internet, Windows will take care of drivers etc.

There will be hardly anything you will need to do other than enter your name etc...

I had an issue a while ago where one of the extensions in the right click context menu would crash explorer.

(It was Symantec PGP, which it's not likely to be in this instance, it's just an example.)

However removing this fixed the issue completely, so removing all of the bloatware could well resolve the issue if it is something in this context menu which is causing the issue (quite possible).

Thanks everyone really appreciate the advice and help.

I called HP yesterday and they said I can obviously get a full refund and try another one, but first I could try online support and troubleshoot it. I then had to go out so just left it.

Today, I go and right click in file explorer and... it works perfectly fine. LOL.

God I love computers... magical bloody machines. Basically it seems to have fixed itself?

I will keep an eye on it for now.. still not sure what all those errors I found mean.
