Does anyone know of any couriers specialising in slow large shipments to the usa? I am moving there shortly but don't have enough to really justify a removing company, It will probably be just two large boxes of clothes and small personal effects.

I moved to USA with my employer so I was provided the services of a moving company. However, if you don't have much stuff, it might be worth taking the extra as excess baggage on your flight out. If you are being relocated, ask your employer to pay for it.

Depending on actual size / weight a courier shouldn't be that expensive.

What's the approximate weight / volume?

Don't fall into the trap of spending more on shipping than it would cost to replace once you're over there...

What do you do?

Hello fellow Californian. Ditto here, I chose my own shipping company and just claimed it back.

I did some research on shipping just a few boxes over, there isn't really a cheaper way than doing a few price comparison shipping sites. Depending on how large the boxes are you *may* be able to share a shipping container but it will take months to reach you.

Probably doesn't help you but a friend of mine did a transatlantic cruise and basically took most of their belongings (some cruises you can take what you like) and the whole trip was less than just shipping everything across via courier. Plus, you get a cruise out of it!

A relative of mine emigrated to Australia and I know it was something like £600 a palette and took 4 months (5 years ago. Again I appreciate it isn't the same it but might give you some idea.

No idea on company used though.

Im moving to San Fransicso Jbod,

Who did you use in the end for shipping?

Santa Monica here. I used IMove International (www.imoveintl.com) they seemed pretty good - but I ended up moving the entire contents of my house. Also they are just an agent, so they will arrange removal guys, the container and then the foreign agent for receiving.

We had the same dilema back in 2004, we the wife and i migrated over to the USA.

We had some quality furniture and the end results was either take everything or take nothing... We opted for the take everything as in a container across the atlantic.. Still have some quite nice things from England as a result. Can't exactly remember the cost, i think it was 2k (best guess) it was a long time ago.

You'll probably find shipping heavy boxes is pretty expensive.. Best off leaving with relatives and having them bring bits and pieces as they come to visit.

I'm relocating internationally soon and am looking to do similar, but I'm not really keen to move all my worldly possessions until I'm well and truly satisfied that leaving the country is the right decision.

I've seen a lot of shipping companies offer crates of varying sizes, where effectively you just fit everything you can in one of those. Has nobody used something like that? As its obviously more suited to moving a smaller amount of items.
