Hello,

Stripped down a few old PCs to build a new one with new Z97-k mb and that's fine.

Tried putting together a "spare" PC from parts - an ASUS P4P800 m/board etc. and it loaded win 7 OK but wouldn't Win 7 SP1 (BSOD).

I suspect that it is the graphics board (tried ASUS 1650 pro and Radeon 9700 pro - both probably 12 years old.) is too old.

Not sure if these can do DX9 or are limited to Direct X 8? Will this cause the BSOD.

The m/b is limited to AGP graphics boards.

Any ideas, Mel

I think DX9 should work as that's what the majority of XP games used. There's plenty of old AGP cards available on the bay. There may even be some on the MM, but I don't have access to that.

BUT what I really want is a Newish AGP board that I know is Win7 SP1 compatible. How do I know what AGP graphics board will work with Win 7 SP1 - I have 2 that don't.

Had a quick google. These AGP cards offer native Win 7 support.

AMD/ATI - HD 2xxx, HD 3xxx, HD 4xxx

Nvidia - Geforce 6xxx, 7xxx

I have no idea though why SP1 caused a problem.

So my 7200 pro should have been OK - must be something else then! Certainly win 7 off DVD was OK, +SP1=BSOD

The radeon 7200 pro pre-dates these cards. A geforce 7200 would work but is total garbage for anything other than office work.

I would think it's something other than the GPU as well. Problem is you're dealing with old hardware and a new OS. It could be any number of reasons why it isn't working.
