Hi,

Very long story short i sent a 7850 for RMA to USA from UK. Return address was to a friend in Canada. Due to complications I got 2 cards, lucky me (different types). I need them sent to the UK, correct me if i'm wrong, all my friend has to do is ship the cards as a gift. Mark value as less than 36 pounds and I will not have to pay duty/vat?

There's no duty if it was a free repair/replacement.

If they were repaired for free and you've got the paperwork, in theory you can get customs to waive the import VAT too.

If they are new (replacements) then there is no duty but you need to pay VAT. Declaring them as gifts up to £36 is tax evasion and they could be seized. Also max compensation if they get lost/damaged will be £36.

Aside from the legal side of what you are suggesting......

Don't forget that if he marks them as a gift and they get damaged or lost you will be limited to the declared value for any claim you make.

Beaten to it........just :)

One unit was replaced, another was a replacement unit I will ask my friend what accompanying documentation was sent with the RMA items.

Fully aware of the insurance ramifications of marking it as worth £36. Wanted to know the chances of them stopping the package for containing electronics opening it and going no way a xxxx is worth £36, lets seize this?

That isn't really how it works. It can go like that, but generally HMRC don't often physically intervene.

The courier making the declaration to CHIEF (from a UK export perspective) however, will be bound by an MOU that means they are supposed to make the correct checks when inputting data - so a pallet of Nike trainers at £20 for example would raise an eyebrow, as would a high end graphics card at £36. It's the courier that would then resubmit using a more accurate value and/or hold the item before contacting the sender for further information.

A quick google search seems to show that I can't re-import tax/duty free unless I notified them when i exported the products.

I can see how that would be the case two big GPU's priced at £36. Perhaps i'm looking for someone to say go ahead do it, I have, you'll be ok lol.

Don't think I would pay more than £35 for a 7850 anyway, to be fair!

This guy right here! My thoughts exactly when I sent it, I figured it'd be worth £50 to replace here. Cost me £15 odd to send will cost £25 to Fedex back. (Extended warranty for my piece of mind really more than anything else)

In my head the risk of it being caught outweighs paying VAT to the tune of £25 odd then getting a DOA or unrepaired item. Just trying to gauge how HMRC is from experience.

How much is it costing you to ship them to the USA and back again

I would just throw it in the bin and buy another one instead of going through all that hassle of shipping costs/risks of parcel being loss/time without GPU/s etc etc..

As mentioned previously I already sent the card its now a matter of getting it back. Prices above. Figured in for a penny in for a pound. No GPU isn't an issue i'm in the process of upgrading new parts arrive next week so if shipped by Friday i'll only be without a card for a week or so no biggie at all.

I'd risk it and put faulty gpu on the description!
Yes you risk it being lost.. But I've personally never lost anything in the post. Worth the risk I'd say
