Why Has Britain Not Discovered the Joy of Ice?

Seems like you guys should get some of these. The water is put into a separate section before freezing the glass, meaning you get the chill of the ice through your drink but it doesn't ever mix with it or dilute it.....

Trouble of that is.... you have to have a supply of glasses in the freezer.

Also, what place does OP go to that doesn't have ice?

See also frozen grapes that deliver the chill yet don't melt or in any way interfere with the drink.

depends on the place... I remember taking an american girl out in London last summer and she wanted ice in her drinks, the barman put a couple of ice cubes in it... she was not impressed, for the next round I had to ask the guy to put in more ice please... so he put in like 3 ice cubes initially..

she did have a point, if you want ice in the drink then put some ice in it don't fanny about with some symbolic two ice cubes that basically do nothing

I always ask for soft drinks without ice; else they all come with ice.

It's rubbish, because I hate the watered down stuff at the end; on that note those glasses look good... however their capacity could be an issue.

Pretty much every pub/cafe/restaurant I have ever been to in this country has put ice in the water.
Maybe I've just been super unlucky? I've literally not been to more than like two places that have served me water with ice in it without asking. Or even like a rum'n'coke - served with no freaking ice.

We don't live in a hot country and therefore historically the use of ice in every drink isn't prevalent as it obviously is in hotter ones.
I figure that's probably a factor, but still, it doesn't *need* to be hot to enjoy an iced beverage. I think it improves the drink any time of year. But yea, it's particularly nice in warm weather, and where I lived before here was definitely a lot hotter.

Have you tried asking for ice with your water? Similarly if you don't want it, ask them not to put it in.
See dowie's response above. Exactly what happens to me. Have to ask for ice and then they usually me a couple measly cubes, which proceed to melt within moments and serve little to no purpose. lol Like they didn't really understand what their purpose is or something.

Ah, so you do get ice, you just want a lot of it, when most of us don't.

When you have a special request it will do you well to voice it ;)

No, I dont get any ice, usually. Not without asking.

It's just weird that ice in a drink would be considered a 'special request' sort of thing. Surprisingly, one of the larger 'culture shock' moments for me coming from America where ice is basically mandatory in a glass of water and most modern fridges have an ice dispenser built in.

Still don't see it, usually have to ask for a little ice. Don't want half a pint of ice and pay for it through less drink. And it's not hot over here so doesn't melt fast anyway.

Water is better when not fully chilled.
Madness. If your teeth hurt when drinking it, you know you've achieved maximum taste.

Whisky should never ever have ice cubes in it.
I highly prefer it. To me, it doesn't 'water it down', it actually smooths the flavor out. I'm sure some say it's the same thing, but I dont find it 'watery' at all, it's basically like a different drink altogether.

But I would agree this is something that shouldn't be automatically served with ice in it.

No Idea where you are going but every restaurant/quick service place i''ve been too puts ice in drinks..

Which is why I have to make it clear beforehand that I do not want ice in my drink. I want a drink to be drunk straight away, not a diluted version of it that requires either waiting for the ice to melt (with the drink still too cold) or drinking it too cold and with lumps of ice against my lips.

I also have to make it clear that I am willing to accept a short measure as a result because the main reason why commercial outlets put ice in drinks is to enable them to sell a smaller amount of drink for the same amount of money. Ice significantly increases profit margins on what is already a ludicrously overpriced product (500% profit margins are considered small). Given how much water expands when it freezes, ice is even more profitable than watering the drink down with the same amount of unfrozen water. With ice, you can easily get away with charging people for a third more drink than you've actually served them. It doesn't take much ice to fill 1/3rd of a glass.

"the Joy of Ice" is a personal preference, whether it's in drinks or on or in genitals. It shouldn't be required every time a person has a drink or sex, nor should a preference for not using "the Joy of Ice" be frowned on.

Nothing worse than by default getting 7 cubes of ice in your already watery syrup mix coke.

If ever I have ice I always ask for 1 or 2 cubes max, 1 large cube is enough to make a pint of liquid cold enough imo, any more than that just waters down the taste really quick
