Hiring a cheap car to get me around town out of Madrid for a few days. These two seem to be the cheapest (hiring because it's cheaper than public transport believe it or not!).

Which one is better?

Fiat 500.

My wife had a 500 and my mum has a Corsa, loved the 500 hate the corsa!!!

There...decision made for you!

Car hire might be cheap but parking in Madrid most certainly is not.

I'm not actually staying in Madrid. I'm landing in Madrid and driving out of town to see a few people. Taking bus, train & taxi is more expensive for 2 people (wife and I) compared to hiring a cheap car to go there and back (even when considering the cost of petrol).

Corsa is not bad if you're doing mileage, not been in a 500 though but been told it's not bad for mileage either

Fiat 500 is ok but the later euro 6 compliant 1.2 petrol is horrible. Literally has no go what so ever below about 3000 rpm which makes hill starts a nightmare.

I thought the Fiat 500 was a fantastic little car, with enough poke to make it decent for the needs of my wife. If it wasn't for the arrival of Baby I think we would still have it today.

The Corsa on the other hand, never could get comfortable and the engine just felt 'meh'.

We had a 62 plate 1.2 sport and was never a problem.

I have had both the Fiat 500 and a new 15 Plate Corsa over the last month or so due to using a lot of hire cars for work, The fiat 500 interior so so cheap and uncomfy yet drives quite nicely all be it serve lack or any acceleration and the Corsa was much more comfy on the inside and much better equipped although I know it depends on the spec of the hire car in question, personally if you plan on spending a fair amount of time in the car definitely go for the Corsa.

I've not driven a 500, all though a friend has one, there is no room in the back seats, there is no room in the boot, the interior is cheap and rattly (his is the 500 Sport) and the 1.2 Petrol engine is a joke.

I'd pick the Corsa without hesitating, my friend having to rag the car up a hill in 3rd gear in the Lake District with only 3 people in the car and it still struggled to do 45/50 MPH made me wonder why anyone buys them (Abarth excluded obviously).

Had to agree totally in regards to the 500 engine being a joke, trying to overtake anything is just a joke may as well start going backwards, I by no means expect the world but I like to think you actually notice a difference when you press the accelerator lol not to mention hit a bloody tiny tiny pothole and pulled tyre off the fiat 500 alloy and lost all pressure grrrr

We've just bought a Fiat 500 as a second car and I'm genuinely surprised at how good it is is. We went for the Twin Air engine though, which is a turbocharged two cylinder 0.9l. It was quite hard to find one though - 95% of them are the gutless 1.2's. This sounds a bit like a motorbike with an airbox howl, and has enough power to be entertaining to drive (especially for the weight).

We haven't done any big mileages in it, and probably never will, but it seems comfy and deceptively spacious.

The 0.9L Twin Air is the one to go for. Most seem to be the 1.2L for some reason, I can only assume people thought bigger number = better.

I was asking the salesman about that (we bought a 3 year old one from a Fiat dealer for £6K) and he said it's because a lot of people don't want to pay the extra £30 a month on the PCP over the 1.2!
