What the big MMO currently

The only MMO that has interested me recently is the secret world but I've still not tried it out. I made the mistake of starting my MMO adventures back in 2003 with eve online which i played for many years. Every other MMO I've tried has just felt kind of shallow and hollow in comparison (although i never tried WoW).

I play world of tanks at the moment which calls itself an MMO but isn't really in my opinion.

I play this too and although I suppose it technically is an MMO, it isn't really.

Then again I have never really got on with the genre so I suppose it makes sense that WoT (which I like) does not play like one.

I feel the same in that the genre is dying. The more it moves away from its RPG roots the worse the games get imo. Developers need to go back to the core gameplay elements for me - technology, companies and budgets are getting bigger apparetly but games are getting smaller, turning into 30 minute lobby queuing systems.

Secret World is awesome; I need to do some more videos on it. Its buy to play; they have several expansions; you can buy the core game with gives you a lot to play through. Can sub to earn whatever game credits they have to buy the rest of the game; about 2 to 3 months sub will give you enough credits to buy most of the other eps; and also while subbed gives you access to them.

Same with Elder Scrolls; I'm having a blast on there; as the lore is Elder Scrolls its different; that's what I'm enjoying. Still puttering around on TOR with the revamping almost relaunching of the game with Lost Empire.

FF14 is another fun game; I resub ever couple months to play. Its not something I'd sub full time to though.....

I played WoW for 18 months on launch and really enjoyed it, but I always felt the core gameplay was the weakest point. The MMO part was great, big world, lots of players....but the actual game mechanics themselves were super dull.

Destiny for me wins hands down on core gameplay, it's a brilliant shooter with just enough RPG elements to keep it interesting. It's let down by the lack of a real MMO feel, with no huge truly open (non-instanced) world and limited player interaction.

Something needs to hit the sweet-spot, a genuinely solid core gameplay mechanic in a massive, persistent open, non-instanced world. I'm crossing my fingers that The Division is going to get there or thereabouts.

Elder Scrolls is having a free weekend at the moment, so make up your own mind about it. I love it, but then I'm a leveller rather than a race to end game type.

Well for me its Eve online, been playing it consistently for nearly 10 years. I've also tried WoW, enjoyed that for a time but soon got bored.

I also really enjoyed Warhammer Online and was sad to see it close, but it has come back on a private server and more info can be found here : http://www.returnofreckoning.com/

I dont rate eve myself, i dont like the lack of control you have over your vessel there really feels like no ability required really. Also you can never catch up to the older players as the game is all time based not skill based so the people subbed for years have years worth of research over you.

Honestly, eve requires a huge amount of ability to do well but its not twitch reflexes or the ability to control your ship, its theorycrafting your ships fitting to get the most out of it, forward planning before a fight and strategic thinking during the fight. Its extremely challenging in that respect.

Catching up with old players isn't really an issue as all skills are capped at level 5. If you have level 5 frigate skills and you get into a fight with a player with double your skill points it doesn't matter, he has frigate skills at level 5 and so do you so its an even playing field. The skills he has invested in flying a battleship or playing the market are irreverent in that situation.

Same, I've only invested proper time and money into WoT, I've tried others but nothing holds my interest.

I don't really play WoT that much any more TBH, just the occasional dip in now and again for a few battles. I used to be hardcore grinder, would get through a whole tech tree in a matter of few days, madness...

Except to say that the older player will have much better support and weapon skills, so can hit you from further for more damage and control the engagement better than you can. Unless he's a n00b of course, which happens a lot.

it doesn't take very long to get basic skills up, and the best time I've had in the game was in a high sec pirate corp and we only really used the basic frigates.

Even from the very start, spend a few hours training and if you can find a decent bunch of folks you can be having a great time. Playing on your own in Eve is never going to be fun or end well in pvp, it's about being part of a decent team.

Accepted, but assuming like for like levels of skill, the player with the most appropriately invested SP will always win. Besides, not all frigates are created equal ;)

I have played on and off for four years - lost interest though over the last few months.

Feels like MMO's have died it always about being the next WoW killer

Last I heard it was Wildstar which I played and thought it was **** poor and Elder Scrolls Online which is pretty good and worth playing now since you don't need a sub

Wildstar is ok for a bit of solo mindless fun really, the dungeons & that can be tough sometimes when youre new to the game, I quite like the vet expeditions which are more or less a soloable dungeon.

Eso has a free weekend this week I think (its a big download tho about 40Gb as opposed to wildstars 15), I do like the graphics in that game, trying to play other mmos after, I realise how much more I like esos graphics than the cartoon style of other mmos, the real problem with eso is there isnt much of a pve endgame which is really disappointing for me, as I am a raider at heart.

Bit early to say for sure.. but keep an eye on Black Desert
Especially if they do actually stick with the GW2 model (buy the game, no subscription, cosmetic cash store only)

Those sorts of games tend to yield pretty good value for money in the long run because you can shelve it and revisit without worrying about subbing
And because they aren't dependant on your subs you know it won't shut down after a couple years
