Looking at these, they look to perform well, look good too as they show off the naked PCB and i mean, who dosent love a naked PCB ;)
What are the downfalls of putting one on an R9 290?? Would I have to have some extra form of cooling for the VRM's?

Active VRM cooling is a must, especially on something like the 290. Airflow over the VRAM couldn't hurt either.

I had universal blocks on my 670s, and I had to ghetto-mount a 120mm fan at the back of them to get decent enough airflow through otherwise they'd start to stutter in-game.

I have a Thermosphere on my 780 and before that a 670. You do have to do something about the vrm's though. I bought a 1u copper cpu cooler off the bay for £6 and cut it to fit on the vrms on my 780. I did a similar thing with my 670 apart from I used a old copper socket 478 cooler I had lying around. With the 200mm fan I have on my side panel running at only 480rpm my vrms are usually in the mid 40's. I am not sure about taming the 290's vrm's though and would probably hunt around for a second hand full cover block instead.

The thermospheres worked great on my 970's and got my current 980ti to 1600mhz.

Thats what i meant :p
Thanks for the correction ;)

Yeah - just some copper heatsinks I had laying about:-

Although I won an EK block in a competition, so it's under that now:-

The 970's had a seperate heatsink already, so didn't need to add anything:-
