Bad driving in the UK - What is the solution?

Hi all,

With the amount of travelling I do and the amount of poor driving I've seen, my mindset always moves to "How do we solve it?".

I personally feel like the UK is perceived to have good driving standards but in reality, we have a lot of problems.

  • Middle lane/outside lane hogging
  • Drivers cutting up others
  • Inconsistent speed
  • Tailgating (and then brake checking)
  • Poor parking (Yellow lines etc)
  • Aggressive driving
  • Total lack of awareness by many drivers

In the last year, I don't think I've had a reasonable length journey without seeing or experiencing poor standards.

Simply put, you expect to have bad drivers if you go to say, India. You don't expect it here yet it does occur.

So, whats the solution?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I think its two fold.

First is re-education. A lot of drivers have simply forgot how to drive correctly. Even just a re-test of theory would help as it seems a lot of drivers don't know the rules of the road, let alone how to drive on them. Considering how we are now in the age where all our details are online and computer based, I don't see how it would be difficult to run tests every so often linked to your licence. Yes, it may be difficult to control cheating but in the majority of cases, a driver should be better educated as a result.

Secondly, a system that allows that reporting of driving offences that can be centrally audited and controlled which then allows punishment as a result. I did think that a SmartPhone App that allows you to upload a picture or video of a driving offence could be useful however it then leads on to the obvious point - The person recording is probably driving and therefore committing a offence.

Both suggestions of mine have flaws which would need working out but I would be interested in your high level solutions.

Lastly, I should say that if everyone followed the rules, I feel a lot of drivers wouldn't mind sticking to the limits/rules. Example would be when you're doing 30 with cruise control on but have a queue of cars tail gating you as they all want to break the limit. It's like peer pressure when driving.

TL;DR - Poor driving in the UK, how do you solve it?

Edit: I appreciate nothing we say in here will make the blind bit of difference - Unless someone creates a petition

Regarding some of the more minor infractions such as lane hogging, I've always thought the answer was just better education and more awareness. Lane hogging is a common gripe which, while not necessarily dangerous, does have quite a noticeable negative impact on multi lane roads. And it can exacerbate some of the other things you've said due to driver frustration (tailgating, cutting up, etc).

I've often said we should have a national "keep left awareness" campaign:
- "KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING - £100 PENALTY" as the default message on all idle motorway matrix signs
- 30 second Public Service Announcement ads to be shown on all UK TV networks, reminding people of correct lane etiquette, the problems caused by poor discipline and penalties for ignoring the keep left guidelines.
- Similar announcements broadcast on the radio, repeated more often during rush hours and on drive time radio shows.
- Ensure all driving lessons explain the basics of motorway/dual carriageway lane discipline (even if no practical experience can be given), and that it's one of the mandatory questions on the theory test.

Ultimately you'll never fully "solve" bad driving, but it would be nice to see the government take steps to improve it through education, in the same way that the "speed/drink driving/drug driving/tiredness kills" message is repeated.

And as Clarkey said - ultimately, things aren't that bad in the UK.

  • Middle lane/outside lane hogging - KILL THEM ALL
  • Drivers cutting up others - This is mostly a reaction to lane hogging
  • Inconsistent speed - Drive faster than them
  • Tailgating (and then brake checking) - wouldn't happen if they're in the right ****ing lane to start with
  • Poor parking (Yellow lines etc) - don't really care
  • Aggressive driving - usually caused by people ****ed off with lane hoggers
  • Total lack of awareness by many drivers - these people are normally lane hoggers

Solution is pretty simple - kill all the lane hoggers.

In the grand scheme, driving standards in the UK are pretty good. Just watch some Russian dashcam vids for perspective :p

I like the idea of PSAs. It's easy and simple.

And I suppose both you and Clarkey are in different locations to me which doesn't help. I'm based around Leicester and I find the driving standards shocking. I also work up north a lot near Stoke/Stafford and I find the standards better (and also the people are massively more polite!).

Maybe it's more a Leicestershire area thing? Though I'm sure certain areas will be the same.

I *hate* middle lane hogging. So make the fine £1000 or three points. *****.

cant believe missed off

  • failure to indicate
  • not acknowledging after been given way

i used to get angry but its not worth it...u know there are some idiots on the road..u just become more aware and adjust ya driving for the situation and move on

one of the newspapers did a survey on what drivers hated the most..ill try and find it

There needs to be a rule set in place were learners have to have at least 20hrs worth of lessons as a lot of young drivers especially women are utterly clueless with basic road discipline sometimes. All these learner crash courses were drivers can enter for there test after 2 weeks etc is ridiculous.
Also I think the fines etc fir middle lane hogging are silly. I'm on the motorway every day and people pulling back into the inside slow lane were drivers plod along at 50mph and then seconds later swerving back into the middle lane to overtake causes far more problems cutting each other up.
If your doing 70 ish in the middle lane then your not holding anyone up

As soon as you pass your driving test you automatically pick up bad habits. You relax and you start to drive 'as you want to drive'. It is called human nature and i cant see anything being able to choose how people drive. We are not robots driving a car!

Nobody is the perfect driver. Just live with yours and others bad habits!

theres a video posted on here somewhere about a driver who owns a dash cam company

and is recording and phoning the police about been side swiped by lorries

and i think both are in the wrong..lorry driver basically trying to give him a fright which could end up in nasty accident

and they guy videoing just hogging the middle lane goading drivers into it to boost his youtube likes and posts

if he had pulled over to the left lane then i would understand..but he was been an idiot too

u see middle lane drivers all the time and evenn though u can be fined, ive never herd of anyone gettin that

Better driving tests. People being allowed on the road with as little as 9 hours training are a danger to themselves and everyone around them and will only ever end up learning the hard way.

In the good old days, the Police used to pull the ignorant ***** over and put them straight. Not enough traffic cars on the roads any more sadly.

Make the fine severe enough and people will stop.

pretty much like drivers using there mobile..fine gone up and so has the points but not enough officers around to force it

One thing that would help a lot IMO is better layout/signage and education for queuing systems.

im sure ive seen signs on motorway saying something about not hogging the middle lane

Cant abide people who think the empty lane for going straight on/turning right is for them to get to the front of the queue in the lane for turning left/straight on.

100 word highway code!

(This may not be the definitive one)

"Drive on the left. Make sure you can see and be seen. Keep a constant look out all around. Be aware of signs and regulations and why they are there. Be predictable. Recognise and anticipate danger and keep clear space from it. Always ensure that you can stop within the distance that you know is clear. Develop your skills. Give courtesy, co-operation and space to others. Don't obstruct them. Never take risks, drive unfit or compete with others. Safety is paramount and far more important than priority. Take personal responsibility for your safety and the safety of those nearby. Enjoy."

(Italics etc added by me)
