Anyone with experience of SILENT cards at idle?

So, just bought a Silverstone RVZ02 and it's awesome, with the small exception that it has no active cooling fans. No big deal, temperatures are still pretty good considering the small size.

Anyway, at idle my (admittedly quiet) 280X Vapor-X is all I can hear and am thinking about buying a card that will run silently at idle by way of the fans not spinning. Asus Strix and possibly MSI Gaming cards do this I think..?

What choices do I have, and what are idle temperatures likely to be considering the lack of case fans? Thinking GTX 970s and R9 390s here by the way :)

I've got an MSI 980Ti 6G and the fans won't spin until the card hits 60c or is put under stress...can't hear it at all

I literally hadn't heard my Sapphire Nitro 390 until one of the fans broke.

Fans don't spin on idle, and extremely silent when they do kick in. Although they only spin when I start playing a graphically intensive game, as the card seems to stay so cool anyway, and so the sound from the game covers any noise the fans might be making.

Incredibly happy with it (except that the one fan went bad and having to do a returns/swap, but seems like a weird isolated issue rather than any sort of common one).

Plus the card is a beast :)

Sapphire Nitro or Tri-X all the way.

I have the Fury Tri-x and like the 390 and 390x it is zero spin.

If you go 970 and want silence you'll be posting to have a moan about the coil whine next week :D

You have been warned......

I have the MSI GTX 970 and it's currently sitting at 35 degrees with no fans running, although admittedly I do have four 120mm case fans, excluding the two on the H100i GTX.

I don't have any coil whine at the desktop, BUT I do get some when I see very high framerates in games. For example, I was running around in Borderlands 2 earlier with my speakers turned right down, and I noticed some whine. Capping the frame rate at 60 removed it completely.

I've just turned on the other PC here for comparison, since it has the Asus Strix 970 in it, and after about ten minutes it's up to 33 degrees, but again, four 120mm case fans.

Some really good comments, thank you all. Was unaware of 970 coil whine... was thinking of going green again too.

Presumably when using Afterburner (my preferred choice) I can customise any fan profile still, to include the no-spinning until a temperature of my choosing?

I wouldn't bother. IIRC its 60c which is more than sufficient.

I'm happy with fans spinning when I'm upto more intensive stuff, just thinking for net browsing etc if temps don't go above say 40 degrees as an example, would set fans to spin up at 50 degrees. Each to their own I guess :)
