This isn't a hospital thread or GO TO THE DENTIST, because I've already been.

Had over a week of intense pain due to a large tooth at the back that I think I may have damaged it eating something, but going to the dentist instead of taking it out, they've given me antibiotics to cure a root infection, which may have come in through the gumline or a small crack.

The problem is, they won't take it out until next bloody Thursday when the infection goes away. The pain at times is unbearable, how the hell did people deal with this many years ago, I have no idea :(

Any of you lot had this before and waited it out?

Oil of cloves was a classic remedy for tooth ache and it still works wonders, it's the only thing which calms mine down. Seems to work within seconds :).

A waiter in Malta once told a girl I was with at the time to put a painkiller between the gum and the cheek next to the tooth, and let it dissolve. She had a root canal started before we went to Malta and the tooth was dressed but it had come off, she was in agony. The trick suggested by the waiter worked a treat, might work, might not.

I am something of an expert when it comes to toothache. I have found doing the following makes a massive difference. Listerine, swish it about for a minute or so and repeat every 20 mins or so. Take 2 nurofens and crush them, add a drop of water and form a paste...push the paste in and around the problem tooth. Will make life considerably more bearable until it gets pulled.

I suffered with an infected tooth,it was agony,it would burst out green puss from my gum,the dentist drained it three times before I eventually said pull it out

I think the local blacksmith did teeth pulling in the olden days

go to the supermarket and get clove oil or if you have some cloves at home make it yourself or just bite on a raw clove.

Suffered with toothache in the past, had a couple of root canals, (which are gold crowned now!)

Normally if you're on antibiotics, they should start working around 24 hours after you've taken the first one, once they start working the pain will go very quickly - relief is on it's way.. (I know how you feel, it bloody awful) Until they start working, there's not much you can do other than to nail painkillers, I once tried clove oil - but it didn't help and just felt like I'd had a load of **** in my mouth,

Last time I had bad toothache (absess) the ONLY thing that could take me away from the pain threshold was to stand up, or keep my head up - as soon as I lay down it was unbearable... (what a fun night that was..... ;__; )

Oil of cloves as others have said or something with Lidocaine in. ;)

Other than that, lots of alcohol as thats how they done it years ago. :D

Had a tooth infection in the summer. Absolute agony. Use Co-Codomol to help with the pain until I got to a dentist who gave me a weeks worth of anti-biotics and said come back in 10 days. (yeah, thanks for that, why can't you rip the ****er out?)

After a week the pain went and when I went back they could either repair or remove.
Never felt the needle go in, tooth out within a minute.

Turns out he knew what he was talking about.
Stick with the anti-biotics, they do actually work.

They can't do much until the infection has gone as it might spread. I doubt you would want that.
