Stuck behind tractors and farm machinery

The problem here isn't the tractors - they have a job to do - but the morons who sit behind them with no ability to overtake and the succession of morons behind them who leave no gap between them and the car in front.

So by the time Pepsilol arrives at the back of the queue in his V12 he no longer has a tractor to overtake, but a tractor and a queue of 20 nose to tail morons. He can't even do it in stages because everyone is 1 foot from the car in front.

Don't see how anyone but the first couple of cars are "morons" tbh, after that it's too far gone.

As long as you pull over every 30 seconds to let traffic by I dont mind you on the road. Otherwise use the fields.

Also as above the old farts who are happy to follow tractors and the like need removing from the road.

There is a safe following distance and there is a gap you can safely pull into after overtaking someone, and the second gap is bigger than the first.

Having said that it is annoying following a load of cars unwilling or unable to overtake.

Around here there's not a lot of difference between a farmer driving a tractor and trailer and some old fart that shouldn't be on the road doing 35-40mph on a 60mph road. Both have huge tailbacks and neither will pull over in the numerous laybuys to let people past.

The thing that really get's me about tractors around here is that kids that look like they just left school are driving around without a care for anybody else on the roads in huge tractors towing what is basically a converted articulated trailer.

I find tractors and slow moving vehicles are fine. The problem is that I spend most of my life on B roads and find almost every opportunity where you can overtake there's someone coming the other way - that's frustrating .

Why do farmers need tractors to go on the road in the first place?

They are a hazard and the amount of road accidents that are a direct cause because a trator was on the road must be quite high.

I even saw a Fastrac overtake a tractor the other day which led me to believe that Fastrac's have a purpose to tow trailers and cause little obstruction so why are they not used more?

Tractors should be bound to their land with faster more roadworthy vehicles used to take the produce or whatever farmers like to stick in their trailers. It also does my chuff in how farmers seem to get away with what ever trailer they fancy sticking on the back of their tractors. I hardly ever see one carrying matching plates yet us road users have strict guidlines to follow regarding trailers as do lorries.

So you expect farmers to have a separate tractor for every piece of land they own which isn't directly joined together?

The last time I was stuck in a queue of about 15 cars behind a tractor there was no chance of overtaking for about 10 minutes due to the opposite carriage being busy, when there was a chance to overtake the car directly behind the tractor didn't make any attempt. When there was a good clear straight bit of road the 2nd car and all of the others overtook both the tractor and the car behind, I reckon they're still stuck behind the tractor in the middle of nowhere, heh

Ok you owe me a new keyboard for that one :D

Umm... We do have to come along with a scraper and clean it up if the council say they're too busy at the time
And what else are we meant to with it city boy?!

Realy????

Lived in and around the countryside all my life, (now 45), and have never once seen a farmer clearing up all the crap they leave all over the road.

I don't mind following tractors provided they connect up light's to trailer (if they work)- nothing worse than finding overtaking place and getting half way past and tractor indicators are going for a right turn.:eek:

I just follow now if it's obvious there isn't straight bit of road ahead but I leave enough room in front for BMW drivers behind who risk life and limb to get past.

Yeah a friend of mine lost her husband exactly that way down here in Cornwall out for a ride, tractor turned across in front of him, trailer had no lights connected at all.

Tractor driver was prosecuted and convicted of numerous offenses, then H&S went after the farm and secured a conviction of them as well.

Friend was later awarded a large compensation payout.

It's the people sat behind tractors that are more irritating!

Unfortunately not everyone drives a vehicle that can accelerate rapidly enough to enable them to overtake in a safe manner.

There are very few vehicles on the road that cannot safely overtake a 20mph tractor.

You should try my Pajero :D it accelerates as quickly as a VLCC supertanker.

Massively under powered for the weight of the vehicle.

Don't even mention hills its positively painful:(

Don't have a problem with tractors really, around here barely any of the drivers pull in anywhere to let people past - and it is on a 60MPH A-road when I encounter them most. Yet, that's still not really a problem, as said before I find it's the people directly behind the tractor who refuse to overtake even at completely safe times who are the issue.

Prime example was Thursday evening, about 5:20PM on said A-road, long straight section of road with no junctions. There are actually broken hatched markings down the centre of the road which are more than big enough to fit anything other than a bus/lorry in for an overtake with oncomming traffic still safe. However, the people immediately behind the tractor still refused to overtake, even with no oncomming traffic. I was about 20 cars back as it is and there was easily another 20 behind me.

Luckily the tractor turned off into a side road a mile later, but the way people seem prepared to sit behind a tractor doing 15MPH on a 60MPH road boggles my mind.
