Hi folks,

As the title says really, I have a job offer but they want me to start before they do the medical, references and other paperwork. Is this normal? In the past it has always been the other way around, the offer comes on condition of ..... and the conditions are satisfied first.

Regards
Scotty

Sounds risky to me. If you fail any of the other bits you're unemployed. I wouldn't start until the offer was unconditional.

On the other hand any new job could be terminated before the probation period has ended anyway, so unless you have another option, what do you have to lose?

Edit: I missed the pertinent bit as it was in the title. Sounds like you do have something to lose as the question is about whether or not to hand your notice in. In which case, I'd hold on too.

But at least that's generally within your control, whilst the references/medical aren't.

I would insist on the medical aspect first as that is the most likely problem area. References, as long as you have been honest, are rarely a problem.

The references aren't a problem, the medical shouldn't be a problem but last time I did this it was high due to 'white coat syndrome' I almost wasn't aloud to start work until they were happy - I called HR and they insist I have to take the risk..... I dunno. They say its a 20min checkup - ears - blood pressure - breathyliser and history. Simple but I dunno......

A few places I know do conditional offers first and wait for the results of medical before full offer. It seems odd that they'd expect you to start before getting the results of the medical.

What are the conditions and ts and cs surrounding it?

no weed for you in the run up to the test

Tho on a serious note , I would say medical first , then accept job / hand in notice to current employer

A lot of companies will do a drug test with any medical

It's a basic offer of employment on condition successful completion of references and medical.
