Cumbria flooding

Amir khan was in Carlisle today lending a hand and meeting some of the flood victims , also some guys came up here and made a load of curries for them too

I drove up Warwick road last night on my way to work, poor sods the amount of peoples stuff ruined was sad to see:(

Cumbrian properties are a disgrace, i see they tried to back peddle on what they did, hope they go under for trying to milk the situation.

I did the same at the weekend. My girlfriend lives just off Warwick road; water was literally lapping over her top doorstep but never reached inside. The basement was ruined, but compared to her immediate neighbours whose ground floors all flooded, she got VERY lucky! I drove around the Warwick sideroads about midnight on Saturday too, was very eery, all lights off and no cars, stuff piled up outside. Not nice to see :(

Nobody else on here from the North West in the midst of this crazy flooding?

We're lucky we're at the highest point between the two affected areas near me. Whole fields just gone, the river is literally meters higher in some places. Unfortunately my local village has mostly been flooded and appears to be all over the news, friends losing livestock and businesses & homes being flooded.

It's really surreal, never in 30 years has there been such an event here and there's more rain to come tonight.

We have managed to avoid it but next door didn't fair so well, they are a couple of feet lower than us and had to get the buckets and sand bags out.

Gutted, I'd keep an eye out as its just started raining again in Whalley where I am. Love how nobody is moaning about it though. Just cracking on. Friends with 4x4s are all out doing what they can.

We are under water sadly. Right next to the river roch. Old work place is under ( for scale of depth it's about half way up the car windows there ) Everyone we know is safe and well. Was a gas explosion earlier caused by this luckily nobody was harmed.

Hope everyone else is safe :)

Unlucky dude. In terms of population Rochdale and Hebden Bridge seem the worst hit. Hope it subsides quickly.

We have never really known flooding in Whalley like this and I'm not aware of any flood defence ever being in place.

Hopefully they'll dredge the rivers and canals a bit more after this.

The extent of the flooding and the fact it has never happened before on this level, AFAIK, indicates it's a bit of the freak event. You can't begrudge a total lack of defence against the unforeseeable, which isn't to say there shouldn't be defences in areas of possible risk.

The field near us is a flood area. It floods at least twice a year every year though not to this extent for a while. Stuff like that needs defences, If a area has flooded for the first time in 20 years then it's not as high of a priority imho.

I'm not begrudging anything, it really is a freak incident for my village at least. We used to have school busses cancelled due to risk of the bridges being overwhelmed back in the day but the rivers never burst their banks.

But I do know they don't do as much maintenance on the local riverways as they used to. You can't expect action for the sake of nothing but the extent of the damage so far is more than just a warning of an ongoing issue. It's a right mess for some who never would have imagined there ever being an issue like this on the horizon.

I'm very lucky to be high and dry yet just up the road from it all.
