Okay guys, so I'm going to have a little bitch / give my backstory / then I'll move on to my questions for you lads & ladies. If you wanna skip my rant and just get to the meaty stuff, skip to the dotted line. lol

I've been a loyal Logitech customer for the past 4 years (stop laughing.) I started with the g35's, which in my opinion, were a great headset for the price, giving a very decent soundscape *for the price* in both gaming and music while retaining a decent build quality. By no means exceptional but very logitech.

I eventually upgraded to a Logitech g935, which was the definition of *OKAY*. By no means was I impressed, however they did the trick, they were neither overwhelming nor underwhelming and the build quality seemed fine. Nonetheless they broke after a year, being wireless they just randomly disconnected and then one day, refused to switch on. Oh yeah, and they're almost 100 pounds... Okay logitech.

Being the crazy madman I am I decided to upgrade to the Logitech G633 for even more money - it broke within 6 days of me owning it. I wasn't overly impressed with the audio, I thought everything sounded really flat and the "surround sound" feature they included in their ****** drivers seemed to just make the headset really "muddy"? I'm not even sure if that's an audio term, excuse my lack of knowledge on this subject.

So here I am ready for greener grass, spread my asscheeks, tell me what an idiot i've been and what an audio peseant I am. I've been a filthy audio bitch and I need to be punished.

**TLDR**
Basically I'm done with this gaming headset ********, I want a separate headset and microphone. Your thoughts on the equipment listed below:

**Headsets I'm Considering:**

  • Philips Fidelio X2

    Sennheiser HD600

    HiFiMAN HE400S

    Any suggestions?

**Mics I'm considering**

AntLion ModMic 4.0

Any other redditcommendations?

**Sound card**

I haven't got a soundcard - but this is my Mobo http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FX_R20/HelpDesk_Download/

I realize plugging in a 300 doller headset in to my mobo is pretty retarded, so I'm open to suggestions, is it worth buying an external soundcard?

Honestly, joking aside, thank you for all your suggestions & taking the time to help me work through my Stockholm syndrome with Logitech.*

AKGs and the mod mic - doubt you'll be disappointed.

Love my HD-600s but they wouldn't be my first choice for gaming purposes and from what I've heard the HE400s (though I think I listened to the i version?) aren't really suited to gaming - no idea about the X2s.

EDIT: Can't see anything about the sound on that motherboard but the HD-600s need a fairly decent amp to drive them - most motherboard audio would struggle to produce anything worthwhile directly driving them (they come with a 3.5mm jack hidden inside the 6.5mm though so you can plug them into the normal sized sockets easily).

Is that the AKG Q 701's?

Why would you take these over the X2's, they both seem really strong contenders, but the X2's look beastly.

Also someone recommended the SMSL SD793-II so I can do optical out to the headphones, however would plugging my mic straight in to my mobo be an issue or should I get a simple usb adaptor?

I'm not in a position to compare them to the X2s the AKGs are good however and wouldn't disappoint as to which is better I couldn't comment.

Personally, I dont think there is any point running $300 phones from the motherboard unless it is one with a decent dedicated headphone amp. (if such mobo's exist).

If you are really serious about audio quality then I would recommend you get an or external USB headphone amp or soundcard with a build in headphone amp like an Asus Essence STX II or a creative x-fi. One of these with more modestly prices phones would sound better (IMHO) that expensive cans plugged into the motherboard. I have the Asus card (older model) and I can confirm that it is a very high quality sound card (tested with Denon D7000's which were $1200 cans in 2009).

My son has a pair of Kingston HyperX Cloud II which come with their own build in dac/amp. I think they sound excellent for the money and seem to be well made cans with no gimmicks. Ideal for gaming. check out the reviews.

If you need 5.1/surround, I can't help.
