What's an unbiased stance on this van purchase/refund?

We bought a used 58 plate Vito from a dealership at the beginning of September and have had issues with it since consisting of 4 breakdowns. Three breakdowns are all the same resulting problem (no turbo, causes van to trundle along with no power and max of maybe 30mph) but apparently different causes. Fourth was a dead battery which we could find no explanation for.

It's back with the dealer again now for this 4th breakdown and it's got to a point where it's simply not reliable for business use. We've done ~2,500 miles on top of the ~89,000 it had upon purchase, and that's only 14 trips so it's broken down a quarter of the times we've used it. In fact we've had to do 6 trips in courtesy cars which aren't really fit for the task of replacing a van.

There's also been issues with the steering since the start which they claim to have fixed twice but it's sill bad, pulling violently to the left generally and especially when going over bumps and potholes etc.

We've asked for a refund and they've only offered to buy it back for £1,000 less than the ~£14,000 we paid for it. However given the small relative mileage increase and the amount of work that's been done on it that will no doubt be its 'selling point' then I can't see them not being able to sell it for the same again.

As an unbiased third party, does that sound fair or should we stand by trying to get a full refund?

From our point of view we could have just hired vans for £1,000 for the few uses we've had without all the faff, breakdowns (which happened on the way to and at jobs) and courtesy cars etc and we can't see them selling it for less than we paid.

Having a van available the last 3 months for £1000 doesn't seem unreasonable but I suspect you could get this down with further negotiation if its an opening offer.

The underlying issue for me here is that if you wanted a van that was reliable for business use then buying a 100,000 mile one probably wasn't the way to go about it.

You've paid way over the odds for that imo and it sounds like a bit of a lemon.
The mileage is nothing for this type of vehicle - I've seen Vito's & Sprinters with over 500k miles on them, it's what they are built for.

A few 2008 Vito's from A/T....

I'd have thought you'd get a good one for way under £9k....

Thanks guys, though I don't think the price was high comparing like-for-like. It's a combi automatic, the cheapest of which on Autotrader is the same price (£14,995) and that's the base model. Ours is the Sport-X so 3.0L, all leather throughout, heated seats, DVD player on the roof etc. It's a really nice piece of kit if it didn't keep breaking down!

There's only 4 Vito Combi Sport-X's on Autotrader nationwide and the cheapest is £21,540 with 73,000 miles.

Panels are cheaper but we need a crew van so it has to be a combi which seems to add on a premium to every make and model!
