Hey guys

Just about to pull the trigger on a new Yamaha RXV679 and a set of Tannoy HTS101XP speakers from Richer Sounds.

I went in there (Richer Sounds) and basically had some concerns regarding the shape and set up of my living room, and that I'd be worried by the fact that the rear speakers would be in front of me almost.

I drew a quick diagram and he said if anything, the setup is actually pretty ideal given where I'd be sitting in relation to the speakers, and that the rear speakers should be inline with you (not heard this before?) and I'd definitely get the full effect from the system.

He seemed like a top bloke, took the time to explain everything to me and compared all the systems and combinations etc, sounded like he really knew his stuff so I have no reason to doubt him but I just wanted some other opinions just so I know I'm not going to be wasting my money.

I've drawn a diagram below, and where I'd be putting the speakers/sub. Would this be ok? I can't really move furniture around but happy to move the speakers obviously if you have better locations. I plan to have them all on speaker stands if that helps

Thanks guys

You're always going to have to make concessions with a room shape like that.

Buy it, set it up and move them around to suit.

A good set of rear speakers for me has never "convinced" me that something is behind me, but just filled in the sound stage to make the effects come from all around the room.

Pretty sure the dolby 5.1 setup specifies your surround speakers as "side/rear" speakers anyway and the location is between 90 to 100 odd degrees.

Ninja edit - in fact, here you go: http://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/surround-sound-speaker-setup/5-1-setup.html

90 to 110 degrees, so even level with your viewing angle and dolby says you're good.

Sorry to bump this, but just an idea, would putting the speaker that is currently behind the table behind the sofa on the left be better?

I will nearly always be on the bottom most sofa, laying across it so my head is at the left end

I'd go with this approach......the way the picture shows it would be too close to the fronts IMO.

Great, thanks! I'll give that a shot, will need to work out a way to keep it out of the reach of my walking 1 year old :p

Finally, any recommendations of sturdy speaker stands? They'd need to be quite tall

That's what I'd do.

If you can mount them up on the wall pointing down it would be even better as they'd be out of the way and give you a good sound stage.
