The other thread is now spoilersville, so if for any reason you want to discuss the film without having it spoiled, this thread is for you. Please use common sense and spoiler tag things if you're in doubt!

Didn't want to risk venturing into the other thread, but 3D or not?
Not been to the cinema in ages and certainly nothing in 3D

The other thread contains mixed reviews of 3D. Some people say it was amazing, while others say it added nothing.

3D or not?

Post conversion and not filmed in 3D, so 2D first... mate saw both over weekend and said it was better in 2D. No stupid Clash Of The Titans "here's a spear coming at you" moments, but serviceable all the same.

I've a feeling Abrams is parroting the party line on 3D with this one, saying he was impressed by how good it looked, as he's not really been a big fan previously (Into Darkness was post converted as well).

Like it or not (I don't mind 3D, but I'm not a zealot), there are some shots in the film which are specifically filmed that way to make use of 3D.

For example the very last scene in the film. They pause and hold for a few seconds, to show off their 3D, whereas in a 2D film that shot may have been a few seconds shorter.

It's fine in 3D tho. I never found the 3D distracting, or poorly done.

My local vue stratford are not doing vueXtreme in 2d for some reason. Only 3 vue cinemas in the country have Starwars 2d in their extreme cinemas. I have emailed them asking what's up. I dislike the 3d and won't go cinema unless its in the xtreme ones or imax.

So i may have to travel to shepherds bush to see it in 2d extreme. Which is not the end of the world but probably end up doing it in to the new year instead of on the way home.

Guy at work watched it on saturday in 2d and said it was very good, he is going to rewatch it in 3d.

3D was generally terrible in this, the first 10 minutes you're straining your eyes as it's so dark already and 3D glasses make this worse.

There are some real standout moments where the 3D shines, without spoilers they are Jakku (Falcon), Lake and Forest :D

I thought 3d was pretty good. Directors seem to be finally understanding how to use it, still far from perfect, but heading in the right direction.

Seeing this on the 29th, basically blocked my internet for spoilers lol Going to the new delux showcase near me as well. 3D.
