I'm undecided on which graphics card to recommend a friend of mine.

We have decided on the following 2:

KFA2 Geforce GTX 980 SOC
Club3D Radeon R9 390X 8GB GDDR5 Royal Queen OC

The r9 390x I can get is £30 cheaper and has 8gb rather than 4gb. The GPU will be used in a custom build PC that will power Golf swing technology.

If you were to purchase either of those, which would you go for and why?

Kind regards

hmmmmmmm... 30 cheaper....

I'd look at the 390X; but if you're willing to go 400 pounds.....then Fury Nano would be the choice....faster than then 980 and same price

that's what I would do. 390X or Nano....980 just isn't worth it at 400......:) Not with Nano sitting at 400 now

For gaming purposes I would ignore both options, save even more money by getting a 390 and then clocking it a bit.

However, does the required use have any pre-requisites that may cause a lean towards either option?

It's to run a specialised golfing simulator, which analyses swing and so on. It's pretty heavy on CPU and GPU and therefore wanting to get the best bang for the buck.

AMD have reports of overheating and that has swayed me a little, but the 390x has 3x Fans on it, so I can't see heat being an issue.

Maybe there are other people out there running this simulator, ya might be able to get a better idea which runs it better if ya search specifically for the sim hes running. Have you tried searching for reviews or people using the sim and see what comes up?

If you are referring to the 290 series with the reference blower coolers then that is a thing of the past now since none of the new AMD cards use that type of cooler. All the 300 series have good coolers which can keep temps below 75C with good case airflow.
