Is this replacement card better?

Hi,

I sent my friends XFX Radeon R9 280x Double Dissipation card away for a repair. I just received the parcel and they have sent me a Sapphire Nitro R9 380 w/ backplate overclockers sticker on box.

Has my friend won a watch and got a better card or have they sent something worse and overclockers to match?

Thanks

Well, here is a youtube video test:

With some OC on 380 , you can closed the gap if i can say so. Of course , won't be as fast as 280x in many situation.

Thanks for the replies. It's the 4gb version and it says on the box overclock this product is fitted with a backplate. So I assume they done that to match it.. Don't think it would bother him or me so as long as the card is very similar and we haven't been given a much weaker card then all is good.

A 380x would have been a similar card and the 380 even when overclocked is weaker than the 280x. I'd definitely send it back and ask for a 380x if they don't have the exact same card in stock anymore.

That'll be a nice result if they do it but I suppose what they are also considering is what features it has over the 280x such as GCN 1.2, WDMA? and Freesync.

Those alone make it the preferable card out of the two in my book.
It will be the better card in the long run.
On the face of it you should be getting a 380x though.

The 380 is slightly slower (~10% or less) BUT consumes less power, is cooler, is shorter, has more features (e.g. freesync), does tessellation better, etc.

Overall, it's a good replacement.

This. I would take a R9 380 over a 280X in a heartbeat but if you can get a 380X then all the better. :)

Having owned both tahiti (7970, 7990) and tonga (285), the 285 was much more of a PITA to overclock because you can't stop it's throttling due to it's powerplay implementation. You have a very tight budget of extra power and voltage to play with before it starts throttling.

If you don't need the new features and don't care about the power consumption, tahiti can be a lot better.

if it's 4Go card i would keep it, it certainly have more usefull features, and the 4Go makes it great for crossfire later if you find a cheap 2nd hand.

The 7950 boost cards had the same issue, nothing a little bit of bios or software tweaking (read MSI Afterburner) can't overcome.

Few video's of my 285 running at 1175Mhz/1500Mhz. (Elpida memory)

How did you stop the throttling with afterburner? I couldn't do it when I owned one.

Also, I'm not aware of any tool that can edit the bios of those cards. VBe7 only supports GCN 1.0 cards.
