Ridley Scott’s The Martian

I also watched this last night having listened to the audio book a month or so ago.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, some bits were chopped and that's been well discussed in here. I'm pretty much in agreement with Raymond in that they really had to remove some parts otherwise it would have dragged.

Mrs. Feek wasn't in so she didn't get to see it - I'll happily watch it again with her.

Why did he grow a beard? I know why ..Ridly Scott had little respect for his audience that he was clutching at straws to show and display a passage of time. You can understand and connect with why Tom Hanks did in Castaway... He didn't have a razor...Watney had a space mini space centre. The Film for me failed to show this epic sense of space and passage of time.

Sean Bean casting...I can't believe anyone here thought he was credible as Rocket scientist!

Iron-man at the end...In mavity people dissed the Fire extinguisher scene being used as Rocket Booster....And in this we see Watney pierce his suit in the vacuum of space and fly like rocketman? I'm sorry but this was just silly.

No real sense of threat or Danger...Watney was extremely capable..And in so much control I felt comfortable with his plight...In castaway for example you connect and feel Hanks frustration and isolation.Watney takes everything in his stride even when the **** hits the fan.

He had to preserve water since he didn't have much of it, and had to make it from the fuel. Dry shaving isn't really that enjoyable. He didn't even have enough water to wash once, he says at the end of the movie he hasn't showered since they left him.

He had an electric shaver. He uses it at the end.

Maybe he just thought he wasn't going to make it so stopped caring about shaving? It's a really minor thing to pick up on. The movie had its problems but this wasn't one of them.

Its a minor thing but it just made me sigh! Watney was in control and one of the things in military training is that personal hygiene is paramount. Not only if only for psychological morale.

Saw an article saying it's now available on windows, only in America though. Still pre order in the uk :(
This will be one of a very few films I actually buy.

For me there was no sense of peril...Or emotional connection with Watney...There was no character development...What he was going through was Epic but it never feels Epic...

Lines like **** you Neil Armstrong were cringeworthy...This could have been a brilliant film...But it was Hollywood nonsense...IMO.

I was on the edge of my seat in mavity...This was to funny for its own good...And none of the characters had any depth...The captain of the ship was a nothing character...

Plus how do we get involved when the central character knows everything? There is no steadfast struggle...What we get is Watney facing problems and fixing them and moving on...

The book does do a much better job of conveying both the timescale and the complexity of the problems he's solving, but it's hard to show that in the film without totally losing the audience.

I understand that but Iv'e got to be rooting for the character/s

I was genuinely rooting for Ryan in mavity...This is what makes the film special.

Really? mavity was a such a **** film though.

I loved it...Its one of my only real special moments at the IMAX..

The First person scene in the burning Space craft was amazing...

People dissed it for the story...But the film is peppered with Sub Text...mavity is brilliant.

mavity Vs The Martian....

Hmm Both have their strong scenes and both got a bit .. "far fetched " to the point where i disconnected and rolled my scientific eyes.

I didn't see mavity in IMax format only 3d but i imagine that it is one of the best film experiences in that format ever.....

|Im not a big reader so i miss a lot when i see movies but The martian certainly felt like it could use more meat to it. It got a bit preposterous as time went on...

I'm fairly sure that only two members of the Ares 3 crew were military and Watney wasn't one of them.

Indeed, although visually beautiful in places mavity was as dull as dishwater with a poorly written story and way too many pretentious and cliched moments.
Although not perfect itself 'The Martian' was far less pretentious and cliched, however Interstellar is king imho.
