I am working in Montreal for 2 weeks at the end of Jan and early Feb. My weekends are free and I've always wanted to go to Niagara falls... yes its at least 6-7 hour drive and I am willing to do that. I plan to hire a car for my stay, and I have 2 options....both are 4x4 as I deem it necessary at the time of year I am going....

Choices

Jeep Liberty
Jeep Grand Cherokee

There is a few £ difference in price between them but just looking for most capable and comfortable in case the weather turns bad. At the moment there having "strange" weather, as in there is no snow fall but I am planning for snow. Anyone have any experience of those 2 cars or even that trip around that time of year? Any info would be great.

I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee when I was over in the US a few weeks back. It's big, seemed to have options galore (heated steering wheel, massage seats, cooling/heating seats, iPhone media, Sat Nav, panoramic roof). It was ideal for US roads and just sitting back. It was of course MASSIVELY crap and if I am ever seen buying one then shoot me, but in the states going up and down mountains it seems to fit the bill. It had an engine that took different fuels, though I just put petrol in it due to it being 1p per tank.

Before you get too excited these are not actually your choices - you are not choosing a Liberty or a Cherokee. You are choosing a 'small SUV' or a 'bigger SUV'. These are simply example models - you could end up with almost anything in each class. Some in each class will be more capable than others.

Frankly the road from Montreal to Niagara is all highway and it's unlikely you'll encounter anything that requires a 4x4 to be passable, but you'll be likely to find better cars in the higher class anyway so I'd opt for the 'Cherokee'.

As Fox said, you might get a Chevvy Traverse or something... and they are complete **** :(

Well, renting a car, not being able to drink having to focus on the road in bad conditions when you could instead be watching the scenes around you.

I like driving. I enjoy it. Do I like driving 5-6 hours straight? Err...

Depending on the weather, I might pay the difference and get a mustang if its the new model :) would love to drive one. I understand it says "or similar" but its not my money and if its not similar ill just change until its something I am happy with. Just would feel a bit more confident with a 4x4 if the weather is bad. There is no way in hell I am taking a coach...The car / suv will be with me the whole 2 weeks.
