CPU Degraded before my eyes!!!!

Congrats, dont be so ambitious on this one unless you are prepared for the loss.

It is pretty hard to destroy a modern chip if you are sensible with the clocking but it does happen.

Sorry about the rotation...

This has been the most complicated computer install in my life! I've had so many issues with the bootup, had so many post error's had to diagnose...finally managed to sort it out but now cant install windows..i get the error

Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware.

I've took gpu out, soundcard out, tried different HDD's still nothing

This is driving me crazy!

Windows is not compatible with your hardware

This is driving me crazy!

You get that when you have some drivers that you needed to load at install time, and didn't do it.

I had a system that would boot in RAID mode, start the install, see the drives, install everything, then on final setup would tell me "Windows is not compatible with your hardware". It needed the latest RAID drivers at the start of the install to work correctly.

so your not using what was basicly the best 4790k I've ever seen and have instead spent a load of money on a 6700k setup?

ok :S

Hope it clocks as well as the last one man.

The weird thing is, I have never had an issue with this drive, even on the first install everything was fine. But when I formatted and reinstalled again it started coming up with this error message. Am not even sure what drivers it needs.

'New Boy' I know mate, but I have a ROG theme for my rig, and all the ROG boards had been discontinued, wanted the maximus vii formula but nowhere to be found. One on amazon but stupid price for old the chipset age, and it wasn't new. I will test the 4790K I have when I have time to make sure it works fully and no issues. If so I will sell it.

Am not going to overclock the 6700K just yet want to get 100% stability on stock before I go into oc. Need to setup the ram, currently running at 2400MHZ when it should be 3000MHZ, a few things to sort out but atleast it's up and running bar some issues.

It got to a stage where I was going to RMA the board because I actually thought it was faulty. It turned put my power plug, the pwer+ and pwer- that plugs in along with the reset switch etc was causing it issues, I have no idea why.

I have noticed that THE 6700K runs much cooler than the 4790k. At idle getting 22 and under load 30-33. I have read though that with the 14nm they are sensitive to both temps and vcore not just one.

I also think that the overclock just wasn't as stable as you thought it was initially.

Try using OCCT with the large data set, it's my weapon of choice for finding instability.

It's way easier to fry CPU's using the newer silicon lithography we have today. Lay off the schoolboy approach to overclocking and read more articles and guides before you proceed.

Well it wasn't too long ago that I posted https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=28957729#post28957729

Talking about how I could get 4.9GHZ at 1.32V stable. Well I've definitely jinxed myself!!

Over the past few weeks I've had a lot of system crashes. BF4 crashes constantly. I didnt pay it much attention and thought it was compatibility issue with windows 10 pro. Anyway got tired of the constant crashes so I changed back to Windows 7 ultimate!

Recently got a ASUS ROG GTZ980TI Maxtrix Platinum, so when BF4 carshed in windows 7 I put it down to early drivers. Anyway as the days progressed windows started crashing a lot, decided to return everything back to stock...and bam! 100% stable no crashes gaming for hours on end. To cut a long story short I'm struggling to get 4.8GHZ at 1.35vcore, prime95 loads but then crashes after 1 min. OCCT keeps reporting different core errors. I managed to do a 20 min prime95 at 4.7GHZ at 1.35v but OCT at the same settings reports errors in cores.

In short I think my CPU has degreded so fast! Am actually surprised to say the least; I knew it would eventually degrade but never this quick! Generally do Intel degrade quick? This 4790k is my first intel, I've always ran AMD, from the days of Athlon 1600+.

My last CPU was a AMD 1090T and that was overclocked to 4.5GHZ with insane Voltage (can't exactly remember...i think around 1.46v) and that never degraded during all the time I had it, which was for 3 years. I've sold that setup to a close friend of mine who's still running it with no issues. Also I'd like to add that was air cooled. (Awsome cpu in all honesty).

Back to my 4790K, my temps were all within acceptable limits, only once did it reach thermal throttling and that was me pushing the hell out of it at 1.4V after taking my H110i off and re-fitting it and didnt apply new paste. As soon as i saw it reach 100 i stopped the test, so wasnt at those temp for more than a second. Went out and got the H110iGTX the same day and temps never reached 70 or higher under full stress, I never went up to 1.4V again.

Did the thermal throttling damage it maybe?

I'm pretty naffed off that this cpu had degraded this quickly in all honesty. I have contacted silicon lottery and they said as soon as they get 5GHZ 4790K in stock they will email me so I can snatch one up. However now am thinking will that also degrade as quick? Is it the architecture of the cpu that doesn't hold up overclocking too well? or was I just very unlucky? I mean 1.32v was not high at all!

From reading your post and the rest of your reply's through the thread i would say that your CPU OC was never stable in the first place.

Yes that was core temps.

Well a friend of mine has got the 4790K and currently seeing what he can get.
In the mean time, OC the 6700k. I got 4.7GHZ @1.3V stable, 4.8GHZ @1.36V stable, currently on 4.9GHZ @1.385V, running aida64, XTU and realbench

I won't be running 4.9GHZ just wanting to see how good the chip. I will bring it back to 4.7GHZ
