Thermal shutdown - Intel

My google is weak, maybe i'm just too hungover, who cares..

I thought i'd have a few games of Blops 3, had AB open and after a game or two the CPU was sitting at 101c!? When do they shut down due to being too hot? I thought it was 95c?

My god I didn't realise Intel coolers were THIS bad! Off to OcUK shop to buy a proper one!

Which cpu as there are varying cut off points across their range. All will start to throttle once they hit a certain point.

I think they start to throttle around 95c as i remember when running p95 on both of mine, the highest core at 95c would show up red in coretemp. Indeed, the stock cooler on theese is awful. I had the misfortune of having to use one for a day or so while waiting on new paste so i could use my k2 cooler.

That means about right, it did start to get a bit jumpy so it could have explained it. Yeah my air cooler didn't fit in this case so had to pop this one on

Might just go and buy a h55 or something today, I get discount with the people in purple shirts so it's not to bad.

Doubt the problem is solely the cooler, sounds like the tim under the ihs is incorrectly applied from factory. Friends 4790k was atrocious even on a h110i, for him he had to delid and reapply colab silver to cure his 90c+ temps.

I've had this chip under a WC loop for ages running at 4.8 ghz not topping 55c so nothing wrong with the chip

I've probably just poorly applied the TIM and added with it's terribleness it isn't helping at all.

At stock even under a quality air cooler/custom water. The haswell chips will get extremely high temps if you use later versions of prime or stuff like intel burn test. The last one i had at 4.7ghz on 1.3v would easily get to 75c in games. The hex core in sig on 1.3v for 4.5ghz maxes at 64c on one core, rest high 50's-low 60's, same cooler and fans as the 4790k. Just shows the difference that a soldered ihs makes.

Yeah I know, I had an old Phenom chip that I couldn't get over 50c with a stock cooler!

I think i'm going to wait until broadwell-E before i go x99.

Ill see what the broadwell E chips are like, hopefully then we will see a bit of a price drop on the 5930k. Or i suspect there will be a few up on members market.

I found out why it's running so hot, it's running at 4.4ghz and 1.21vcore. God knows how, I didn't touch anything in the bios when I put the new motherboard in. Back to stock we go! Hopefully that'll help a little.

I tyhink TJ max or shutdown on that chip is 105C.

Your correct you need a better cooler and do check the quality of your mount.

it should be at 4.4ghz on one core under load, (turbo). Also, make sure the bios is upto date. Early versions on both Z87/97 would overvolt a bit. Gigabytes being a bit higher than asus i found.

No it's solid 4.4. Not turbo. All 4 cores running flat out, it's not even dropping back on idle.. Stupid thing. I've never had an MSI board before and the BIOS is really confusing compared to my Asus board.

Id just set it all back to defaults in bios then. Long time asus board user myself and just recently switched to msi. Albeit on X99, from what ive seen of asus bios layout msi isnt that much different.

Seems to be hitting about 80c on stock in game, so better. Still need a cooler though!

bigger problem here than the cooler buddy.
i run a 4770k on an none copper intel celeron cooler for about 3 months it maxed out at 72c playing bf4 for a few hr's

stupid question but your not overclocking are you?
and ever more stupid but you have the fan running yes??

This, Intel dropping coolers on recent 'k' processors was a good move.
