Much to my surprise I received a letter from BT this morning, enclosing a cheque 'as agreed'.

I have no idea what it is for as I haven't contacted them recently, so I quickly unfolded the letter to see how much it was for... 0 pounds and 01 pence only!

Yes, for one whole penny... have they gone mad, or what?

I will certainly be cashing it as it is definitely genuine... it is on BT watermarked paper, (to verify hold to the light) and has 'tamper evident UV', whatever that is!

There was probably a case once where somebody won money out of the because they owed him a penny, so now they just send these ridiculous letters for the 10k or whatever it costs a year to administrate. I'm speculating but these things do happen.

Reminds me of one time ages ago when my nephew managed to get my card blocked with a pin sentry. I went to a bank cashier and said "I'd like to withdraw everything in my account please". For about 20 seconds the look on her face wondering whether I'd just won a lottery or something was priceless until she realised I had about £21.50 in the account.

Why would you even bother making the trip to the bank for 1p?

May as well its already cost them a good 60p to send the cheque :p

Reminds me of when I got a letter off the council because I underpaid my council tax by 18p. They sent me a threatening letter that cost them 60p to send. If theyd paid my 18p theyd have saved themselves 42p :D

I paid it of course. In pennies.

You don't own land with a telephone pole on it do you? They pay you rent for the land the pole is on, mate of mine has about half a dozen on his land and he gets 14p a year or something off them.

What astonished me was that up until about 4 months ago, BT were still charging my mother in law about £4 a month for telephone rental!!!

It's absolutely mental they still get away with that. Lots of old people paying for a manky phone when you can get one for £10 in Argos.
