GPU Went Boom :(

So I got a 980 Ti Matrix today, I installed it and upon boot there was a huge white flash that came from the GPU and a very loud pop followed by a terrible smell of smoke and some black dust that was flung against the inside of the case window.

I switched everything off, Checked everything, Put in my other GPU, 980 Ti Classified, And that works perfectly.

I tried the Matrix again and it's working but if there is any GPU load over around 10% even with fans at 100% the temp sky rockets to 90'c and everything freezes.

It seems I got a faulty one, But what would cause this ? Faulty cap, Resistor ?

Glad it didnt kill your mobo or PSU, yeah i wouldnt worry about what exploded, just send it back :)

Did you give it time to get up to room temperature before installing it? Condensation can cause a short circuit if the electrical device has not had time to get up to room temperature. Electrical devices in the past eg vhs players would show a warning and would not allow the device to be used until it warmed up and the condensation sensor says all is ok. Today very few devices have these sensors but the installation manual would warn you of this.

I always wait a good few hours before installing or powering up new equipment for this reason.

It was sat in a room with a temp of 18'c for around 2 hours before I installed it so I'm pretty sure there was zero condensation :)

That is unlucky I feel your pain. It really disappointing when you pay a lot of money and wait for something only to find it doesn't work. I don't get surprised anymore just relieved that it works!

The condensation thing is a good point. I'll remember that one for the future as I know someone that used to work for Sainsburys and they used to transport their electrical goods on the chilled lorries!

Didn't know about this, I'll take this on board next time when I order something new.

Good job it did it within the 30 days from receiving it for a full refund or replacement, otherwise you could have been waiting 6+ weeks for a replacement without chasing the retailer after 28+ days, but that's ASUS for you.

Yeah I'm getting a refund as I just ordered another 980 Ti Matrix for Saturday delivery so I won't have a lot of downtime while the refund goes through :)

Odd how the card still works though albeit the temps rise to 85'c+ with 100% fan speed.

Ouch and not good. Asus are overpriced generally but are generally decent products. Surprised to hear this but get it replaced and get it clocked up :)

Well from all the reviews the Matrix stays at around 1420MHz on an auto fan profile, Never goes over 68'c and with no tweaking which is epic it's just a shame I got 1 with a faulty capacitor :(

Maybe the voltage regs went and it's being stuffed full of volts?

Sorry to hear that though dude, that sucks :(

It happens, Luck of the draw, It's all been sorted and my new Matrix will arrive on Saturday and the faulty one is being picked up on Monday for a full refund :)

Not quite everyone, if something went bang it'd not be going anywhere near any of my other components. :D

Definitely return immediately OP, at least you have another 980ti just to tide you over!

I love how when something blows up, everyones first thought is to try it again. :p

Thats why I was like

If a piece of hardware goes up in smoke (especially when it explodes) You don't stick it back in again to see if it still works, can cause even more damage.
