I tried to get a spare key cut from an old key from the seventies a while ago but they didn't have the correct blank key. I just saw on ebay a person that will cut me a new key based on the serial code and deliver it for £2.

It then dawned on me that this bloke would know exactly where I live and that I have something that fits that key. It's far less anonymous that a random shop employee that doesn't store the pin combination or know who I am.

I was thinking then that it might be wise to have it delivered to my work place instead. What personal info can an ebay seller see? Is it possible for them to view my home address regardless of the delivery address?

I've seen a machine in an Asda or large supermarket that will cut a key from a laser scanned impression of the key you use. Not sure if they would help or not.

Just don't bother if you're suspicious.

For your own peace of mind and if you're that determined, use your efforts to google phone numbers and ask about instead of wasting your energy on worrying about a locksmith busting in to break into your antique ballet music box.

Why not send him a note asking how he deals with customer confidentiality?

If you're worried about it, check to see if he has a physical store and that he is a proper locksmith.

Some do ebay because it's an easy and cheap way to reach customers outside of their local area.

Try another key cutting shop until you hit on.

Chain shops are expensive. A key that costs £10 in Timpsons would usually cost £3-4 at a local indie. But if only Timpsons can do it, it'll probably be worth it for the peace of mind rather than sending your address to some eBay burglar.

Timpsons is extortionately expensive. Find an independent key cutter and it'll only be a couple of quid. Timpsons wanted around £10 last time I was in there for a standard yale key

But for £10 the service is instant and you can watch the process and get both keys back without giving any personal information.

if he's not going to see your billing address and you've got a common enough name then yeah, get it sent to your work place if you're worried
