Can I oven cook these chips?

I bought some french fries (they're called that but aren't thin, they're regular chips) to stick in the oven but just realised it says to fry in oil for 4 minutes. It also says pre-fried. I don't have a frying basket, so just wondering if they'll cook properly in the oven?

edit: actually, smelling them, they just smell like freshly cut potato, I don't think it'll work in the oven. Bugger.

Try it, what do you have to lose? Just bang them at 200 until they look done

Actually, yes, you're right! It'll work, I found this

50 minutes in the oven.
I think I better buy some fresh olive oil, mine says BBE Jan 2015, lol.
I've got some rice bran oil, do you think that would be ok?
I don't have celery salt, but I have Saxa fine sea salt.

oil is just to stop stuff sticking, so if the oil you use has a higher smoke point than the temp your baking / frying, all will be good

You can pretty much cook anything the way you want to, it'll cook but it may not yield the results you desire.

You don't need to do anything fancy as that recipe just dump them on a non-stick tray tossed in a bit of veg oil and turn them every 10 mins, they'll be done in about 30 mins max.

If you want to fry them, which is quick and easy, then you don't need a basket to do so. We deep fry all the time and have never used a basket. If you've got a metal sieve and a slotted spoon that's all you need.

My rough method for oven chips/wedges

Preheat oven to max temperature
Peel (or leave on for wedges :) ) and cut potatoes into very chunky wedges/chips
Par boil until the edges are soft
Drizzle tray with a little oil/fat and put in the oven for a couple of minutes
Drain potatoes well and put on tray with a bit of salt, pepper, paprika or whatever
Leave for 15 minutes with the oven on max
Turn the chips and drop the temperature down to 200 until done

Thanks guys. I'm cooking them right now (rather late dinner!) and am doing a bit of both your suggestions. Drizzled with 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and some sprinkles of salt, currently on highest temp for 15 minutes then will drop it down to 200c. :)

They've come out quite good! Just under 30 minutes, in fact, a bit overdone, dried out and over crispy but not bad. I'll do them for 20 minutes next time. A bit too much salt too. But still tasty :D

Good to heat although there's no real need to season chips before cooking, that something you should do when they're cooked and do it to taste. My mother used to do that when I was a kid and I hated it. Everyone should apply their own salt and vinegar.

Ye gads man, just buy some potatoes, peel and cut them into chips yourself, lightly cover them in olive oil and salt and pepper, and then cook in the oven at 200-210c for 25-35 mins.

Takes minimal effort and tastes delicious... no idea why you think freshly cut potato can't be oven cooked?
