Are most drivers spiteful?

I just refuse to let taxi's out etc
Might be just round by me,but they seem to think they own the road.
They just pullout, rarely indicate when turning or even stopping, dont even acknowledge when you let them out.

My little late night rant over haha

It's too easy to type-cast all taxi drivers as bad purely because you've had a few bad encounters with some.

In reality their driving is no worse than the general public you just happen to make a mental note when they do it because they are easily identifiable.

I'd argue but I can honestly say I've never been around a taxi driver and thought 'what a nice, polite chap'.
Put it this way, I went to uni with a guy from Norway who genuinely thought they had a different set of road rules to other drivers.
He thought they were allowed to just stop wherever and whenever they wanted, were allowed to go through red lights, break speed limits and had priority at junctions.

All anecdotal really. Only real way you could determine if taxi drivers are worse drivers is by comparing accident statistics. Or fines handed out by the police for taxis vs cars.

It's in a taxi drivers interest (or any other professional driver), to drive safely really, when losing their licence could cost them their livelihood.

Another aspersion people like to cast is that of HGV drivers, especially if there's an accident on the motorway, "they mustn't have been paying attention" etc.

I think it's 50/50 to be honest, some idiots on the road and then some very nice people as well

I disagree its a lot less than 50/50 - if you are waiting to get out of a turning (in car) or cross a road (on foot) even with slow moving heavy queues where people don't really lose anything to do so other than let up for half a second to make the gap feasible to use - you will still wait quite awhile before someone will show simple consideration.

Previous job it used to get very queued back and slow moving on the main road outside and I've seen people waiting to cross who won't just push out waiting quite awhile before anyone will let them cross - personally I always just let the cars immediately at the crossing pass then just walk out even though it would upset some drivers.

EDIT: Though to be fair I bet there are a good few drivers in that situation who see you waiting to cross and are like - "if I slow down and wave them across that muppet in the car behind natting on their mobile while eating and fiddling with their makeup is going to notice too late and go into the back of me"

One that really makes me laugh is something I see quite regularly when cycling to work. Busy traffic but cars moving slowly (maybe 10-15mph). A little bit of a gap from one car to the next in front. A third car pulls up at a give way at a side road on the left. Second car on the main road then hits the accelerator to close the gap so that the car at the give way can't get out, before slamming on the breaks so he doesn't ram the car in front.

Every time I see it happen I can't help but think it is pathetic, but then people do similar to race and get to the back of the next queue or next red light all the time.

Agree about the shopping part but I've never moved my car to go and pay for my fuel. Don't think many people do that.

I said above that I nearly got into a lot of trouble for doing it at a very heavy populated station.
I thought I was doing other drivers a favour but nearly got arrested.

Last year my daughter was filling up at a Morrisons petrol station but her card wouldn't work.
She didn't have enough cash so rang me to go and bail her out but it would take about 30 minutes.
When I got there the car was still at the pump because the policy was not to move a car from the pump until the bill had been paid.

Makes sense because the next person can't use the pump until the outstanding balance has been paid anyway.

However a poster above says he does park away from the pump and then goes and pays meaning another driver is filling up before he has paid.

One thing that really grinds my gears is when people don't indicate! Love it when i go to cross the road when there is a car coming towards the junction, they don't tell me where they are going then just turn and beep at me! I just walk slower to annoy them. Those that don't indicate deserve to be annoyed! :D

Normally at a filling station the cashier gets a prompt to activate a pump, which resets the balance. So I don't know how they would keep track of things if people all across the forecourt were leaving the pumps to park. Then somebody goes in to pay claims they were at a different number pump than they actually were, ends up paying the balance on somebody elses pump. Chaos would ensue. :D

That's what I was thinking when he claimed he does it.

I think most people are actually quite spiteful if they can get away with it, in a car or not. Usual keyboard warrior/behind the wheel types will always be spiteful.

It was Xmas eve and I was searching for a parking place at a large supermarket. The car park was full. I stopped beside a vehicle and waited for the car to leave, as It's engine was running. The driver appear to take a long time to leave the space. I was becoming frustrated. There was a car behind me sounding it's horn, no doubt in anger as I was blocking his way. Anyway, I got the space. I got the impression that the driver who gave me the car space was spiteful.

That driver was not spiteful. You assumed that because the engine was running the person was going to be leaving. That was your error.

How did you know they had not just arrived? Or that they were not waiting for someone to come out of the store and had the engine on to keep the heaters going? How did you know they were not making a call to a loved one before leaving?

It strikes me that you made an assumption and so parked up in the middle of the car park thoroughfare when there was no empty space to be had and nobody reversing out of one.

The driver behind you was held up and all because you decided that a car with a person in that has the engine running should leave to make room for you.

Sorry, but I think the problem lies with you not them :)

It's illegal to use a phone whilst operating a motor vehicle without using handsfree. Therefore I'd like to believe you weren't suggesting they were just sat there with the engine running whilst on the phone using handsfree and not moving...that would just be silly if they were!
