MSI 390 Thermal Paste causing Heat Issues. Replaced

Well you obviously didn't research well enough, of you'd have found countless threads/reviews where it became clear the cooler was total crap.

Don't blame others for your mistakes.
Correct I made the mistake of listening to forum members like you

It's funny cause I've spent the past year reading countless threads on this forum where some new visitor/member is asking about a 290 or 290x and regular forum people like you would recommend the Asus and MSI TF models, I've lost count of how often that happened here and it annoyed me too see so many of you ignoring the problems so many of us mentioned and suggesting those cards to other people. Yet now you call them the worst coolers of the generation.
As for your countless reviews please provide some rather than just saying things, we've already ascertained you say things that have no merit

Your post was ignorant, as you seemed to imply MSI are still producing the crappy cooler that was on the 290.

You made that regarding this post:
When I changed the paste on my old MSI 290 it barely changed the temps, and there was much less than you seem to have on your card. I'm unsure if this is something they do manually or by machine, but obviously they over did a touch on your card.

Same here,

My Twin Frozer IV 290x was a 94 degree monster before the paste change and a 90 degree monster after,
And that was with a 10x10 fan profile so it required a 90% spin to stop it topping 90 degrees.

Sorry but MSI suck.

EDIT: All on stock box clocks

That never implied nothing of the kind yet you use that excuse for attacking me over what I said, Just as you then said it was my fault for not reading the reviews so I showed you a couple of reviews which painted a very rosy picture of the MSI card with load highs of 73 and 79 degrees, Now your saying there was plenty of negative reviews so please show me some. I'm genuinely interested in seeing them.

MSI's questionable quality control,

I don't know if many of you remember this being posted on the forum a few months back but at least with the new cards you only have excessive paste to worry about and haven't found anything else under there :)

I'm only kidding it can happen to anyone, I once found an inch long piece of rubber in a vegetarian meatloaf, Thankyou Waitrose.

You'll not find a post where I recommended the MSI 290X, given that it had a horrendously bad cooler.

Again, you seem very bitter than you made a mistake and didn't research enough before you bought a sub par product.

Now that we MSI 390/390X owners made a informed decision to purchase a card with a good cooler, you go on the warpath with your bitterness against MSI.

Probably best we leave it here, I don't see you seeing the light on this issue.

In other words that's a no then.
Again you make a claim you can't or won't back up.

No surprise there.

As for bitter, I made a comment agreeing with someone else's experience with the cooler, you're the one who replied to a post not directed at you calling me Ignorant. It was never about my supposed bitterness towards MSI and more about your rudeness and then your lies regarding what was and had been said. ie: making things up as exampled in my last post and using them to justify what you have said. It's a shame that a forum has to be spoiled by a select few that see fit to attack others for having an opinion that does not fit with there narrow definition of what's right and what's wrong. And you're quite right I won't be able to find anyone's posts regarding people looking for advice on Hawaii back when it was the current range as the forum limits the quantity of threads/data it keeps available.

Ek will release blocks for this card soon, great news really.

EK are doing MSI 390 gaming block ? If so im tempted to give it a go. Saying that im also tempted to get a 980ti give my Mrs the 980 in mine and sell her 390 but i dont know now i have the 390 stable im quite happy with it. Im just terrified to update the drivers as its stable and took 5+ hours of messing with drivers to get it stable.

Yep, EK changed the MSI 390/X from 'unavailable' to 'Coming Soon' :)

Wondering if any of you can help me with my MSI R9 290X LE, as this seems relevant.

I've been running it fine for 11 months and never heard the fan at all. In the last few weeks, the fan is running loudly and I can see temps of up to 90C even when I'm not gaming and the fan is running flat out. Nothing has changed at all that may have prompted this increase in temperature. Sometimes, even just loading up a web page makes the fan run faster. Looking in MSI afterburner I can see this too and fan is running ok.

Do you think I would benefit from re-applying the paste ? I'll still be using the stock cooler though, as I don't have watercooling. Is there a closed loop alternative I could use?

if i was you I would take out the GPU and give it a clean, it maybe dust build up causing the issues s it cannot shift the hot air properly.

fans normally spin up depending on the temp of the card so for some reason its running hotter than normal.

Thanks, I'll take it out tonight and have a look but I'm hoping there should be little to no dust as I have fan filters on the incoming fans, but will see. Perhaps the cooler is getting looser..who knows :)

Just replaced the paste in mine to some MX-4. 20c difference under load. MSi quality control is amazing.

Under load previously, the card would shoot to 94c and start throttling itself within 5 minutes of gaming. I tolerated it because I love the look of the card, but knew something wasn't right. Replaced the paste and now it goes up to 74c in heaven benchmark. Much happier now.

Here's some photos of the mess:

Same as me chap, Seems they are just caking in on with the Theory its better to have too much. I have messaged them but had no reply. I am not holding out much hope tbh.

I find it crazy they put so much on it throttles the card as when it goes to reviewers or get people returning them due to performance issues. I guess the majority will just put up with it.

Try Valley benchmark and/or leave Tombraider benchmark on full settings running on the results screen for 5-10 minutes. Those are the two that put much higher load load than even heaven benchmark. If you can hold below 90C on Tombraider then it's a good re-pasting job.

Have to agree Tomb Raider certainly heats GPU's up. Be interesting to see how the new one does.

Just reapplied paste to my msi 390, can confirm that msi absolutely lagged them in paste, its everywhere.

Just switched on ROTTR and I had to turn pc off because my fans didn't kick in and i thought I must have not plugged them in properly. Turns out it was just taking so long to get past 60c for them to start up. Playing ROTTR now at about 65c, that is amazing considering it used to be 87c and 94c before the first patch.

I cannot believe how much better the temps are now, what are MSI doing completely gimping such a good cooler. I was sold on this being a quality cooler but was disappointed when I got it, now it actually lives up to the hype. No more 100% fan for me.

Applied a thin line from top to bottom as like picture on page 1.

Yep Makes a hell of a difference, The wife's is still getting the same temps as the day i done it. Friend of mine purchased the same card for his rig and i got the same results before and after when changing the paste on his.
Absolute madness that they have a pretty good cooler then just throw it all out the window with poor paste and application.....
