I understand the etiquette when erecting garden fences (when they are yours) is/was for the best side to show towards your neighbour.

Is this still/really the case? I've read some conflicting info on the interwebs

Ta!

The best side goes towards the person paying the bill. Usually you speak to your neighbour and agree a 60/40 split, person paying 60% gets the best side of the panels.

what kefkef said unless you have something wierd (and old) written about it in the deeds or other such document/agreement.

If it's your fence you can do what you like within reason.

On your deeds it'll show you what fences are your responsibility. You are 100% responsible for these.

As above, best side for the one paying the most or if 50/50 then the one doing the work!

That said, I have the 'best' side facing my garden but I actually prefer the other side... can't win! :/

If you consider what a fence is for, you might not want to give the other side a nice ladder over your fence into your garden :) If it's just neighbour to neighbour then any way, if it's you to public area have the smooth face on the outside.

If you are installing homebase panels then it doesn't matter and we'll see you again in a year when they all blow down, again.

We paid for fencing in our back garden, left and back to a neighbour's garden and right onto the pavement (corner plot). We put the 'good' side facing out all around. We didn't personally have a preference but as above felt the fencing was slightly more secure having the middle braces facing in.

I built mine so it looks the same both sides! Used individual planks. Was hard work but it looks great either side!

Our house is like that. It looks odd, but worse, all the gates are the wrong way round, they open into the road, not the garden. I'm waiting for the time the hinges come out after trying one too many times to open it the wrong way.
